Close Call... 10 years ago...

Christ. He did it again. I used to babysit for this guy. Went to church. 3 girls (not boys, thank god), had the first ever Unix system I ever saw. Also had porn and didn't make it a secret. I was 14. It creeped me out right quick. I stopped working for them. Something wasn't right. Stupidly, I didn't tell anyone. There wasn't much to tell, I thought. Some old guy lets me know he has porn. Big deal, right?

2 months later he gets caught trying to lure a kid into his hotel room after meeting him on a BBS.

...and now he's at it again. My question: what the hell happened? Not once, but TWICE, and now THRICE. Reform? Counseling? @!#$ tracking? And this kid's mother knew!? WTF?!

I'm lucky to just be screwed up in the normal, prosiac sense of the word. I can't imagine what my life would be like now if I hadn't followed my gut. All you kids out there on the boards: for the love of god keep your head on your shoulders. And if somebody so much as winks at you, you tell every goddamn adult in the tri-state area about it.

what the hell.

They are just now starting to figure out there might be a PATTERN. Unreal. I wonder, if he even serves time, how long it will be before he is out again.

I cannot believe you knew this guy. How weird is that. I mean, to think you were actually in this guys home and a possible victim.

On a lighter note, at least you are not as crazy as I thought. Until I finally got to the link in your post, I thought maybe you were just rambling, inanely...

I don't think it's humanly possible to actually know why this happens to some people. I'm glad you weren't messed with DB.
An alarming amount of the girls I dated(this was a while ago) related similar horror stories about neighbors, or relatives, taking advantage of them in such a way.
I'm going to pray for the families involved.
God save us all from the wicked and those lacking in self-control, and help any of us from straying down such a reprehensible path. In Your mercy we rest.

I'm really freaked out. A neighbor just accused me of this after I reported to him that his 10 or 12-year-old son took something from my porch over the weekend. There are children in the houses to either side of the one I rent so apparently I'm a predator because I a) never chased them off when they were in my yard and b) happen to be a single white male (top group for serial killers, pedophiles and molestors, I'm told) who doesn't own real estate. I hate stupid people. I *have* to move out of this crappy town.

me too.
Can't we castrate these kind of males so they'll stop giving decent people a bad name? Ditto on rapists. and racist, sexist hospital managers (my boss's boss. long story.)

I heard the same from a girl who lived in the front apartment a couple years back. I thought she was making it up for sympathy.

This "Information Age" really freaks me out - I have three small children to protect fom both social and electronic interaction, I better get more prepared, or mean.

Sure hope she has charges brought against her as well.

Historically that hasn't worked. It's all in their heads.

No kidding. How incredibly disgusting that she acted in this manner. He should be castrated (yeah, I hear ya Bobby-Mike, but it would make ME feel better) and she oughta be sterilized.

Just my .2

P.S. Glad you walked away, d-b! Someone was looking out for you. (and please don't refer me to the Inane Ramblings thread!)

Prison (in Max. security- solitary conf. w/ no parole) would make me feel better (as a choleric former Marine and a dad I think Death penalty, as a Christian I can't condone that option). The problem with the castration route is that it gives everyone a false sense of security. The sick b*stard would just do something else twisted to release his "pressure". I can't comment on the mother, I can't say how bad it would be for her to be sterilized- it might not bother her.
Maybe she should be exported to Sudan or Iraq.

Inflation?

You're probably right on that. But then my thought is, maybe we should kill him and I know you (and many others) wouldn't agree.

While I'd like to see this kind of peson put away, I don't really like the prison rute because it's a drain on the taxpayers, and some of these types would enjoy it. I want them punished and hurt.
Are forced labor camps legal?

That's a good point ...
What about having an implant that electrocutes them if they start getting aroused by whatever sicko thing they like? Pavlovian kind of thing.
Better yet, tattoo the name of their crime on their foreheads. Modern-day scarlet letter. Everyone would know what they are.
it'd have to be in 2-inch bold type though.

How about Turkey, where unmarried women who have sex are often put to death?

I apologize right now for my venom. I find this sort of thing despicable and it gets my ire up.

Then put them in general population of a maximum security prison. For life.

A woman I used to know worked councelling people in prison. She said pedophiles and the like were generally the lowest form of life in general population, and tended to get "passed around" to satisfy the other inmates, among other nasty things. Even if this guy did enjoy it on occasion (doubtful from what I've learned from my friend) he wouldn't enjoy it for long given the frequency with which he'd have to deal with in general population.

Just food for thought.

People advocating death in this instance are rather short sighted. I was talking to a friend of mine (who spent some time in a federal pen), and sex offenders do not have an easy time of it. Imagine something sick and twisted, turn it up a couple notches, make it a little more depraved, and they get to experience it frequently. Even more so if children are involved. A lifetime of that would suffice nicely.

Let the punishment fit the crime. sounds good to me! (well, as long as it's not *done* to me.)

The question in my mind is, do we want:

A. to make sure he will never do it again?
B. to get retribution on him?

For A, death works, as would life in prison, except that it seems that child sex abusers have a hellish and probably short life in the pen. There seems to be some debate as to whether castration (traditional or chemical) is preventative.

For B, we're generaly limited by the Bill of Rights's limitation on "cruel and unusual punishment", but time in a federal pen sounds like he'd suffer plenty. Does anyone know if a pedophile has ever asked for solitary on the basis that being tortured by the general prison population is cruel and unusual punishment?

I picked solitary confinement based on the jerk getting out at some point. No contact with other prisoners would lessen the chance he would gain any knowledge (of a criminal nature) or hook up with another sex offender and exchange 'tips'.

If it was Life with hope of release, by all means keep him in the general populance.

If it was one of my sons he wouldn't make it to prison. (I know that is a major sin to commit, but I know myself and I haven't walked that far down Christs' path yet.)

"How about Turkey, where unmarried women who have sex are often put to death? "

Both Sudan and Iraq are much more oppressive than Turkey when it comes to such matters. They both are fully into Sharia which means that a cleric can basically pass judgement on a person and other citizens will follow those edicts (stone the sinner, etc.).

"Are forced labor camps legal? "

No, and I thank God for that. If they were I'm sure a lot of people who simply offend other peoples' "sensibilities" would be in them (look at both Russia and China).

"Point is that she wouldn't be able to have any more kids to "mother." "

How about she has to pay for it too, at Gov. contract prices to boot.

Guess that depends on your definition of "forced labor". If it's "labor required to be performed without payment" then most community service sentences could be considered forced labor.

This is one of the first things we studied in some old poly sci class I took. (It's a wonder that brain cell made it through college, but that's another topic.)

Reasons for punishment
1. Retribution/retaliation
2. Specific deterence
3. General deterence
4. Rehabilitation

Seems like there was one or two more that I can't recall...evidently only half the cell made it...
