-- Interesting handheld info from Intel . . . (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10132)

Reading a bit on CNet about Intel's plans for 2001 for the Pentium 4 -- there was a quick blurb about Intel's plans to release a 400 mhz - 600 mhz chip sometime in 2001 (I think) for the handheld market. Don't know what Intel's architecture or target market is for such a chip (PPCs?), but this is probably a good thing for ALL handheld users -- competition improves the breed. Hmmmmm. Let's see, a Palm OS based handheld running a 400 mhz chip --- why would I need a laptop ever?

With a Palm-type PDA running a 400mhz Intel processor, you would probably end up with the world's fastest and most expensive pocket warmer!!

Unless the Pentium 4 is a completely new architecture, then using it in a handheld device is kind of ridiculous. The pentium is an energy hog.

And why, exactly, would I NEED that type of processor in my Visor?

I think Intel is just feeling left out.

It will probably be an ARM chip. Motorola isn't the only one to have liscenced the technology. Intel also did, I think it was a month or to ago.

i'll try an find the link later to an article that discusses Intel's intentions of entering the 'handheld' world.

they have a device coming out that is named something like 'HandPC' or something like that. It will have full PC capabilities and be slightly larger than a PalmIII. I'll surf around a bit today and see if i can't find the link. This device is supposed to be unvieled late next year(?) or early 2002.

i'm pretty sure these new chips will be used in this device.

If you re-read my post, you'll notice that I didn't say it was a Pentium 4 processor for handhelds, merely that the blurb about the handheld processor was in the same CNet article as the P4.

If they DID stick a P4 in it, what a pocket warmer it would be.

If this is before a mobile (or should we say ultra-mobile?) Northwood chipset is released then we might have Rambus suing Palm and Handspring for patent infringement!
