-- Graffiti stops, stylus works? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11163)

Question

Anyone ever seen this problem? I've had it a few times with my Prism in the past couple of days...

I'll be using it and it won't recognize Graffiti strokes. The stylus is still fully functional--I can do anything else.

If I pop up one of the onscreen keyboards and then close it, suddenly Graffiti works again.

This is with no hacks running.

Still happening...

I'm having an odd problem with Graffiti on my Prism. It's been going on for a while now.

At times when I turn it on, it recognizes the stylus with no problem (for clicking on icons, etc.), but Graffiti doesn't work. However, if I simply bring up the onscreen keyboard and then close it, Graffiti then works fine. At some point later (I believe it's always after the Prism has been powered down), Graffiti will again stop working, and I'll have to bring up the keyboard again to "re-activate" it.

I did a hard reset and installed from scratch only minimal software, to try to determine the cause of the problem. Currently I have only WordSmith 1.12, Keyboard (the Stowaway driver, version 1.5), Launch 'Em, and AvantGo 4.0 installed on my system. No hacks or anything else on the system. The problem still occurs.

Ever seen this before? Any ideas what could be causing it? I didn't see how it could be in the Prism, but given that I've completely reinstalled everything from scratch, and that this problem occurred with older versions of those programs and still occurs with the later update, I'm beginning to wonder if it is indeed something in the third-party software or something that's actually wrong with my Prism.

I have had the same problem on my VDLX. I thought it was something in the IR stuff I had just installed.

I tried going to the graffitti training, and that worked, but going back to the other apps didn't change a thing.

I finally tuned my modem from serial to IR and back, and it fixed it.

Is there weirdness in the OS???

Sledgehammer,

Do you have the Stowaway keyboard driver installed?

Yes, I do. But it is the older driver off of one of the first Stowaways on the shelf. I have'nt updated it at all.

Lightbulb AHA !!

I have been trying to get a IR Travel modem from Diamond Mako to work on my Visor. I had a long bit of trying to get the thing to work, as well as having the keyboard issues. I finally upgraded my software to 3.1.3h, and that didn't help. And so I deleted the EasySwitch app. Guess what? The grafitti works fine, no hassles.

I think the people at Diamond should be shot. Their box clearly states that the unit will work with Palm handhelds and other IR-enabled devices. When you try to call tech support, they just regurgitate that the don't support the Palm OS. Then why is it specifically mentioned on the box, in the manual, on the CD, referenceing both the Palms and Visors?

Some people... Sorry to rant.

Lightbulb AHA Again

I went to Psion.com, the maker of the modem for Diamond. (The Diamond modem even has the same Psion stickers all over it.) I downloaded their version of the Easyswitch software, and the IR modem works.

That's Yankee ingenuity for you. We can invent something, but we don't know how to rebox stuff worth a plugged nickel.

Sledge,

Of all the freaky things, I think you've got it.

Get this: I had EasySwitch on my Flash RAM card, not in my Visor's memory. Hadn't even run it since doing the hard reset. It appears just INSERTING the card with that program on it caused this to happen? I didn't think that possible.

But sure enough, I deleted EasySwitch, did a soft reset, and no more Graffiti problem. This is too weird.

I'll report back if it pops up again. If this cures the problem, I'll be very confused.

Exclamation An interesting point

I re-installed the stowaway driver from the CD, labeled version 1.1. Everything still works fine.

I have noticed that using the IR Modem prohibits using the keyboard. The unit can be switched to IR in prefs with no detrement to the kb, but as soon as a program initiates the modem, the kb goes bye-bye until the power is turned on and off.
