Exclamation SpringBoard slot on chopping block

HandSpring will have to integrate a SpringBoard slot in its wireless products, otherwise SpringBoards are dead.

Then they're dead

I can't imagine a sringboard slot in something like the Treo. It looks like Springboard is dead, as well as the Visor. You'd have to be pretty silly to go buy one now that they have announced the death of the product line.

Never again!

I'll never buy another Springboard module!

Arrow Re: Never again!

The majority of Visor owners did not buy Springboard modules anyhow. All the really good Springboards were released back in 2000.

The only module that has been in my Visor since I started beta-testing it is my MemPlug. I don't need anything else for what I use my visor to do. A 802.11 card might be nice to have, but that has already been released, and I can get them cheap on EBay.

Assuming the Treo will be HS's only product line, you would be right. But they haven't said that Treo will be their only product line.

And to the guy who said he'd never buy another Springboard again, I have to ask...WHY? If YOU have a Visor with a Springboard slot, and you see a Springboard you like, why would this stop you from buying it?

Exclamation HandSpring has never made $$$!

I'm never buying another Springboard because I'm never buying another Visor! The fact is that HandSpring has never made money selling Visors.

*looks left*
*looks right*

Well, if they haven't been making money selling Visors, what the hell HAVE they been making their money on? They must be making their money SOMEHOW...

HandSpring is living off of borrowed and invested money. HandSpring has never made a quarterly profit.

I think you'll find that a lot of large companies live off borrowed and invested money. Amazon.com has been around for 6 years, and they're just now showing their first quarterly profit. But that's not to say they never MADE MONEY.

www.handspring.com has a new flash SpringBoard Demo right on the homepage, no new news or info, but maybe a glimmer of hope...or maybe just a way to try and calm otherwise reasonable fears.

Pray to God

I pray to god that Handspring, Sony, Palm, and whoever else might make a PDA builds in programmable Ir remote control features. I use the OmniRemote as my "default" module; so much so that I really can't use another module. The number one reason I pull out my VDX is to read Avantgo pages, the number two reason is to change channels or adjust the volume of my TV, or control my VCR (or that of my dad, father-inlaw, best friend, brother). Actual work referencing of my PDA is a distant third.

And how is this different than MS releasing PocckPC 20XX every year and PocketPC manufacturers orphaning their hardware on 12 month cycles?

I have 3 WinCE devices stitting in a drawer gathering dust. One each from the major releases of WinCE. None of them supported now by either the device manufacturer or MS.

Interesting. it is funny that you never heard this from the PPC pushers on the board. Or those that whine that they can't upgrade the OS in the Visor.

I don't think it's that odd. I think the reason you rarely hear it is that most PPC users, IME, like being on the bleeding edge. They upgrade every year or two anyway, so a particular device not supporting the latest and greatest isn't that big a deal since the BBD they're about to get will be faster/more colorful/whatever anyway.

Yep, I've always thought of Sony's color line since the 760 as PocketPC wannabes in many ways. They put even PocketPC's 'planned obsolesence' timeframe to shame, though. How long was the 610 on the market? Three months?

This quick turn around in products, could it be because:

A) They don't make all that many units so after three months there isn't that much in stock
B) They are such a big company that 1-2 million dollars in unsold inventory isn't that big of deal

The world may never know.
