Arrow

I think the Visor Platinum is a much better device at this time. As with the Palm IIIc, the Visor Prism is really in a catch 22 market. Developers will not fully support the devices until there is a larger user base, and people will not buy them until there are more Color applications in 16-bit color (as the Prism is capable of viewing).

Richard,

The Platinum is a good choice BUT, after playing with the Prism, I am really happy with that one. This is in spite of the limited number of 16-bit apps currently available. I think the Prism is going to be a best seller!

what about the speed

As long as we're comparing the two, does the prism run as fast as the platinum?

I know the platinum is supposed to run about twice as fast as the deluxe. Does the prism have the same performance?

The Prism is slightly slower than tha platinum because it is color and color uses more system resources than gray scale.

I played with the Prism and I like it. But I find it very difficult to read on it with the "meshed" background that it has.

Yes, it will perform slower due to the color screen, but for the record it does use the same processor.

Neither. I don't believe Handspring is loyal to its loyal customer base.

Handspring notified me there would be no upgrade offer for current Handspring customers.

Bad idea. Many companies, such as AT&T and Gateway offer upgrade programs.

I won't be looking to Handspring when it's time to upgrade my PDA. I currently have a VDx, Eyemodule, Stowaway keyboard, Back-up Module, modem, 2MB Memory upgrade, etc.

Instead of reinvesting monies in technology I trusted, I'll keep what I have until it's time for a complete overhaul... at which time, I'll find another PDA.

Sorry, but I have to chime in here. How many items out there cost less than $500, and come with some sort of upgrade program? $500 seems to be roughly the benchmark for what is considered to be "disposable" or "replacable" electronics. If it breaks, or something new comes along, you go out and buy a new one.

Handspring is protecting your investment by letting you keep your Handspring accessories, including your keyboard and your Springboard modules. For the PDA market, that seems to be a big step up from the competition. This includes Palm, who continues to come up with new shapes and sizes for the PDAs.

Do you complain that there's no trade-in/upgrade when your microwave is outdated?

It's unfortunate that they are not offering an upgrade plan, but when you think about it...all your other accessories (Springboards) will work with other Visor devices, so why not buy a new Visor in the future? Palm doesn't offer upgrade plans either. At least Handspring is sticking with the Springboard port, so your accessories work with future devices. Palm III accessories don't work with a Palm V or Palm m100 (without some kind of adapter). I think Handspring is more loyal then most. The market is still new...they may offer upgrades in the future.

I am enjoying the prism. I read about people complaining about the 160X160 resolution but that's exactly why 16 bit color is needed. I have an older computer displaying color at 256 colors and everything looks fine. I try and display any pictures on my visor in 256 color and it looks like crap. The problem is the pixel size itself. Having that many more colors to shade with make up for the limited resolution. As for Handspring's customer care, I have rarely been treated as well by people who know what's going on than what I've dealt with at Handspring. Who else do you know offers support for 3rd party applications for their product? Do what you want with vDx and accessories, but don't whine when you get less support from windows ce devices (by the way, do they offer trade-ins for their products?).
