-- Thincom Modem and Free ISP? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12471)
I'm thinking of buying a thincom modem, but I want to be able to connect to a free ISP (like netzero or juno). Does anybody know whether I can do that, or do you know of any free ISPs that are compatible with PDAs?
Thanks.
(please ignore well-intentioned but not quite right info below... ed.)
We're not talking wireless here, where matching the ISP and the hardware is crucial.
We're talking TCP/IP, SMTP, POP3, and HTTP; standard stuff that modems and ISP's and comm software gotta do. The Thincom (and Plus) are modems, Juno/NetZero/etc. are ISP's, and palm email packages and browsers are comm software.
Should work fine, as far as I can see.
(not that I've done much w/ free ISP's... ed.)

You can't do it with NetZero or most of the other free ISP's without illegally hacking into their system.
These free ISP's make their money by showing you the ads, and use their own login software. Their software takes your username/password, but actually logs in through an encripted password. There is software out there that lets you find out what your secret login info is, and you could then use your Visor modem to log in for free. However, that violates NetZero's licensing agreement.
Your best bet is to keep looking for a free ISP which allows normal Windows dial-up networking, and doesn't need special software to log in. There used to be some of those free services (freei.net, freewwweb), but those companies have gone out of business or were bought by NetZero.
I heard American Express has a free ISP, but the user needs an AmEx card, which I don't use.
I keep waiting for a free, ad free ISP. I expect I'll be waiting for a while.
Workadrounds for Juno that use Rasspy seem to have been defeated, so that won't work.
American Express require a banner when theres no mouse movement or other activity.
