-- IR transfer of applications/data from Palm to Visor (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=651)
Handspring's FAQ page tells users migrating from a Palm device to the Visor "If any third party applications do not get installed onto your Visor, you can beam them from your Palm device".
Has anyone been able to do this with commercial third party applications? It appears that most of these are copy protected any cannot be beamed from the Palm to the Visor.
some work, some don't.
you can beam most apps from one to the other. all that you will need to do after beaming the app, is to put the registration code back in.
the only excpetion i've seen to this so far is the game dark haven. it changed my serial# after beaming and i cannot put my reg. code in.

That's fantastic, not! If the application will not install, use your PalmPilot to beam it over?
That's awfully presumptuous. I don't have a PalmPilot...
Great planning... if I had a palm (IIIx), why would I need a Visor?

I beamed two apps over from my Palm V. No issues however Sluggo is correct it will depend upon the specific application. The only sure way to get everything over is to use a program like Back Up Buddy.
I'll say this much though be careful not to have any duplication of software on a platform then sync it into the Visor....I had City Time on my Palm and it automatically synched a duplicate copy to the Visor when I synched the first time. Boy, what a mess it had me scared that I had received a bad unit because of the conflicts it created. However, once I noticed the duplication and then deleted the synched version all was well.
Chipset,
I think they are talking about migrating their existing apps from the Pilot to the Visor.

Chipset:
The point was that for ***existing Palm owners,*** any applications that didn't automatically install could be beamed from the original Palm device on which they resided.
And there seem to be more than a few people who are upgrading from the IIIx to get increased RAM and the springboard expansion possibilities.
I have been able to beam a few of my applications (Hi-Note & DateBook 3) but several others (HanDbase, Launch 'Em, Listmaker, SynCalc, Magic Text etc) are copy protected and cannot be beamed from my IIIx to my Visor.
Folks:
Anyone who is having problems with the IR beaming process, give BeamBox a try. I wouldn't guarantee it will be able to do what you need it to, but it can't hurt to try it.

I am at a loss regarding your problem. I have launcher and magictext and both loaded fine when I synced the first time.
I'm fishing here but maybe this will help:
Look in the following directories: Palm/SR/backup
Laucher has 3 files LaunchEm2.prc, launcherdb.pdb, launcherIII_Icons.prc
Double click on all three individually and these should load into the Palm installer.
MagicText_Hack.prc is of course the magic text application and I would assume that you've installed Hackmaster already.
I don't presume to know everything and I certainly don't know your level of computer skills are. I'm just trying to help with some tips.
Let me know if this helps though.
Beaming applications works ok for me, but I'm one of those who hasn't been Sync his Visor yet. I'd like to start *using* my Visor, but until I get my datebook, and address book *data* transfered over. Anybody know a beaming utility that will allow me to beam the data?
I'm running Palm OS 3.3 on my Palm III. I seriously hope this isn't a problem.
Winkle,
The Beambox application (link is shown in a previous post) can beam your data in addition to applications. I successfully beamed from my 'PalmPilot Pro with 2MB upgrade' to my Visor.
My 'PalmPilot Pro with 2MB upgrade' has Palm OS 3.3 installed on it so that newer version of the Palm OS shouldn't create any beaming problems for you.
I upgraded from a IIIx (because of memory, springboard, USB, and at the time I ordered (9/14) I was able to eBay my used one for $245 so it was basically an even swap).
Back Up Buddy made my data conversion relatively painless. No issues with files not showing up on my Visor. My only issues were: 1. not removing Palm OS update 3.1.1 from the "backup" files, thus it was installed on to my Visor. (I don't know if this mattered or not, but it sure didn't go long before a reset.) 2. Having daylight savings hack installed REALLY seemed to foul things up (reset loops; I think it conflicted with City Time and its handlings of daylight savings??). After uninstalling DSHack the Visor has done much better, i.e. one reset that was unrepeatable. I have quite a few hacks, and lots of programs, so a reset a day isn't too odd. (I know, I ought to locate the conflict, but that takes TIME.)
The short story is, I didn't need to IR anything.

Kalahari,
Cool. I'll try it.
Kalahari,
Great! I used the Beambox to transfer my databases from my Palm III (OS 3.3, mind you) to my Visor. No OS Version issues whatsoever. I now have a Visor that I can carry, and it will be useful. Now all I need is a functional cradle, and I'll be golden!
Kala, Thanks a million.
Tyler,
Older versions of Daylight Savings hack causes soft resets on Visor. You should download the new version (2.1.1) and install that.
Beam Box did the trick! What a great app.
Too bad native OS doesn't have these
capabilities.
