-- slow mac hotsync (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2833)
Hi all,
I've been a happy Visor user for months now, with one problem: Hotsyncing with an iMac at work has an extremely slow startup. I get a window with the text "Determing handheld configuration" (with "Identify user" on the Visor screen), during which time the machine's hard drive is just grinding away... That window stays around for sometimes 5 or 10 minutes before the actual data transfer begins. Once the actual data transfer is underway, it goes quickly.
When I hotsync at home with win98, I've got no problems, everything is nice and speedy.
Has anyone else seen this problem and/or found a workaround for it?
I'm running the Palm Desktop software that came with the Visor, MacOS 9.0, an iMac with plenty of RAM and free disk space.

Jack, are you using Virex ?
I had the same problem until I resolved it with turning the Virex Control Panel off.
Nope, not using Virex... this is a quite generic 9.0 machine, I haven't installed any system extensions other than Quicktime and iTools, and a driver for a microsoft mouse (and the problem I'm having came before I even got the microsoft mouse).
Now I've got a worse problem, I installed the mac software update from Handspring and now can't sync at all!
I synch a graphite visor deluxe with a G3/400 (MacOS 8.6) and I also have a long wait at the early part of the synch.
It seems to be getting a complete list of all the files on the handheld and comparing that with all the files in the Backup folder. If you have a lot of files, it can take a while.
The wait seems similar with my Visor using USB to what I experienced with my serial Palm III. I'm guessing what I gained in USB speed I lost in expanded memory size.
Try moving everything out of your backups folder to somewhere else, then hotsync. Delay should be gone, but it will try to back up your entire Visor.
It seems that the Visor is real happy if you reboot (soft reset) after making some changes with the software, such as new Hotsync software, etc. Funny, that's the same as the Mac (Do you want to restart; do you really, really want to restart?)
