xp and No sync
Just upgraded to Win XP and also downloaded the new Palm Desktop 4..problem is I can't hotsync anymore..when I hit the button on the cradle, I just get a low tone from Windows and then it times out with another 2 tones after about 30 seconds...any hints?
Heres how to do it...
1. Install the Palm Desktop for XP
2. Open it and configure
3. Reboot
4. Open Palm Desktop and HotSync

Does your system have dual processors? Hotsync is not compatible with dual processors. If you have dual proc., go to task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL), select the "processes" tab, right click on Hotsync.exe, select "Set Affinity", and uncheck all processors except CPU0. It MAY work then--mine is inconsistent, often causing a BSOD.

an interesting symptom there
Those noises you hear from Windows -- low tones? kind of warbling a bit? -- those sound a lot like the sound Windows ME / 2000 or XP makes when it tries to make a wireless IR HotSync. However, I'm sure that's not going on, you probably don't have an IR port on your PC anyway, right?
Here's two things you can tell us that might help...
Go to Device Manager in Windows XP and then carefully observe it as you start the HotSync. Ideally, you should see "Handspring Handheld" appear only during the HotSync and then it will disappear when the sync attempt is done. You can even try to click the + sign beside it, then right click the sub-component "Handspring USB" and try to tinker with various options. Oddly enough, choosing to disable the item and then rebooting and trying another HotSync suddenly solves the problem. There are other improvizations you can do... Handspring Technical Support's better agents know several tricks like this.
The other thing to consider is to look under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section in Device Manager and take note of the type of PCI to USB Host Controller. Then look up the article called "Is there a simple way for me to know if USB is supported on my Windows computer?" at http://support.handspring.com/esupport and follow the directions there. This method will give you a good idea if you simply have to wait awhile for Microsoft to issue updates / patches that optmize your USB Host Controller for XP. You'd be surprised at the number of controllers that work poorly with XP.
Thanks for the help folks, especially Kim. Here's the scoop..
I went to Device Manager, hit HotSync and uninstalled it when it popped up...then I tried again..it found the new device, installed the driver BUT..would not Sync with Palm Desktop 4..so, uninstalled it, reinstalled and tada! All works..Thanks
