-- Why wireless modems are labeled as platform specific?! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9007)
Okay so the question is why?? As a mac user and seeing many people out there who were complaining about Omnisky or Yada yada, or whatever not being mac specific etc etc.... I was just wondering, what could possibly be the reason why it even Matters what type of computer we use? I'm guessing these companies are installing their software via a windows .exe file.. But I don't think these modules actually interface with the computer.. It's just how they get their .prc and .pdb files from the Cd to their hotsync folder/directory. If that's the case, anyone can get at these files. I see no reason why any wireless module would need a platform specific conduit or let along software on the computer end to make the module run. I mean c'mon, if the module is good and the software is good, shouldn't everything be configurable on the Visor itself?? It shouldn't have to depend on the computer. What do you think? Does anyone use a wireless module (beta tester or have seen before) or other wireless device for use wth palm os systems that require an actual linkup to their computer?
Thanks,
mike
for that matter why do pc users need a conduit at all for such a service? and if one is truly necessary, why isnt one available for mac users?
I don't think it's necessary for the service but just to install. So you need the install conduit. Essentially, I think they're just putting some 600K on a CDROM! I forgot who mentioned this, I think James did on the Yada Yada news, but ornow, you install the software on your Visor and in the future, it'll all be preloaded on he module for "true plug and play capability."
perhaps when someone gets one of these things they could let us know how the installation works! palm fivers might know too.
