Question

Does Omnisky offer a $400 dollar a year service plan? I thought I had read that..but not sure. Also, if there is only the $40 a month with no Yearly service plan, is it all worth the $480 a year? Its very pricey, but if its worth it, i'll find a way to scrap up the cash... Thanks.

-Brian

(P.S. Does it crash ALOT? That seems to be the case from some posts.)

Angry Color Support

Here's the message I got back from Omni support on the color support. Color only indirectly through AvantGo:

At this time we do not have any information available as to when the
OmniSky browser will support color. You may however use an alternate
browser with the OmniSky service such as AvantGo that will support
color.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at (800)
860-5767 or online at http://www.OmniSky.com.

Thank you,

Smile Just received mine

Got mine in this afternoon, and had no problems at all installing or running it. It also works flawlessly with my Mindspring POP account.

I'll continue testing it and post more later.

Visor Phone compatable cradle?

mxgian,

You referred to the above cradle. Is this something to be released later? I'm not aware.

It does not charge through in the cradle.

The color support may be coming but right now unless your using AvantGo the color title bar (blue) is actually a phenom of the Palm OS 3.5.

All this aside the screen is a vast improvement over my Palm Vx Omnisky service and much quicker.

The fundamental complaint that I have is the case that they shipped with the unit - it's a modified slip case that has a little cut-out notch to accomodate the additional size of the springboard modem. There is no safety or cover for the top of the modem - thus you can still see the lights etc.

There were a few little minor glitches with the installation that I had: error 0x0302 which turned out to be because a user name somehow appeared incorrectly in the modem setup. Probably caused by a power surge in my desktop when loading the software.

Also, when setting up my UUNET account I kept getting a password error. This was resolved by a soft reset and reinitializing the modem. Didn't have this problem with the Palm but a minor one anyway.

OK, for those of you transferring service from a Palm - you can beam some of the database files such as OS-bookmark.pdb files according to tech support. I wouldn't though unless your Palm has OS 3.5. I got all kinds of errors. I have reported this to tech support and it required a full delete of the Omnisky software and reinstall. Tech support originally told me I could beam specific data files over that had my preferences and web pages but this was a hard lesson learned.

I'm completely happy with the unit at the moment. Once I have it set up completely with my favorites etc I will probably be in never never land.

Question Just a curious newbie

Hey, I know I'm new to this, but I have been reading these posts to find out about the Minstrel S modem for my Prism and I was wondering something:

There was a post by some doc and another from someone else about ignoring what he said or something like that. But I read his stuff from another part of this board and his information seemed good to me, but when he tried to talk about the modem here, no one seemed to care, even though he seemed to have some good info and no one seemed to have it here yet.

Did I miss something? Like I said, I'm new, but if there was something that was done wrong, I just don't want to end up on the wrong end of the silent treatment -especially since I rely on others for help all the time.

Posted by ronaldjq on 11-10-2000 02:40 PM:

Question Don't know what is wrong with the Doc...

I know what you mean about the person who thinks we are ignoring him, but someone did post a message to him and I actually sent an email to him with some questions but I have not gotten a response.

Maybe he is some alternate universe

Exclamation Strange lockups?

Hi,
Is anyone with a Prism and Minstrel S modem experiencing any weird lockups?

Just yesterday, I kept the Minstrel application open to check on the signal strength differed from place to place. I then noticed that there was no activity on the screen and after further investigation, I found that the device locked up and required a soft reset.

I've been experiencing these kind of lockups every now and then and it is hard to repeat them.

Lock ups

I've gotten a fatal error when trying to shut down the Minstrel Modem Manager using the Shutdown button within the app. Of course I try it again now and it works, no problem. I have also had problems within the Avantgo app. I get stuck within the channel manager page and can't get out. This never happened before getting the modem.

RE: Lockups

Yes. I got that fatal error last night and a soft reset would not fix the problem. When I attempted a soft reset, I would get the a flickering version of the startup screen. I ended up having to restore from my backup module.

I asked OmniSky if they knew of any lockup issues and the person told me that there were some occurances but nothing major. I think we need to let them know. I started by sending them an email of the lockup I mentioned in my last post.

Here's a picture that gives you a good idea of the modem's size.

I got mine today too. Couldn't connect. The mistrel app said i had registration error. called omni. pretty quick pick up after the voice mail maze. Gave them my IP address they requested. went on hold. After hold, was told AT7T support wasn't answering. Will have to wait until tomorrow to get the ip "reset."

Software question. I set up using CD and apparently it installed a couple of app on the prisim. But now, I get the same app when i plu in the modem. Can I delete the one on the prism?

Hardware question. Does the modem have 2 megs of mem? If so, how can i access it?

TIA.

Software from CD

I was told that the software on the CD was not really necessary since the applications install automatically from the modem. The person I spoke to said the CD software is there in case something goes wrong with the installation from the modem...

Exclamation Network settings from OmniSky Support

Hello all,

I got the following from an OmniSky support agent in response to my complaint that my device locks up in the Minstrel application. I suggest that you take the modem out before you follow the instructions. I didn't and the modem would just get stuck in the Sign On screen... In my case, I just remove the changes and followed the instructions word for word. Here they are:

************************************
If you have been experiencing some problems connecting or getting web content on your Omnisky unit, you may be missing something. Please check your Network Preferences to make sure that you have an updated script. This script helps the modem to be in the right mode to access the network properly. Take these following steps and you will be best suited to access the network when finished. If you already have this updated script, your may be experiencing other network problems.

1. Turn on the palm unit. (with or without modem; preferably without)
2. Tap on the icon labeled "PREFS".
3. "GENERAL" will appear in the upper left hand corner.
4. Tap on the "GENERAL" and choose "NETWORK" from the menu.
5. Then choose the "DETAILS" option from the bottom right.
6. Next tap on the "SCRIPT" option at the bottom again.
7. Your script should appear as follows:

Delay: 1
Send: AT\\APPP
Send CR:
Wait for: 1
End:

8. If this is what your script appears as, change to the following:

Delay: 1
Send: ATE0V0
Send CR:
Send: AT\\APPP
Send CR:
Wait for: 1
End:

9. Tap "OK" at the bottom twice to get back to the "NETWORK
PREFERENCES".
10. Then perform a soft reset.
11. Attach the modem and sign on in Minstrel.
12. From here you should get three check boxes and a more reliable
connection.
AIM preferences should be:

1) Tap on Pref's icon on the Palm
2) Tap on Network in the upper right hand corner

* Service should be minstrel, user name is blank, password should be
<prompt>, connection should be minstrel

Hopefully this will alleviate your problem.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us at
(800)860-5767 between 5 AM and 8 PM PDT, or by visiting our website at
http://www.omnisky.com.

********************************

Hope this helps...

Regards,
Ron

Cool Platinum and Minstrel S

I received my VPL on 11-7 and my Minstrel S on 11-9.

My VPL is tightly constructed and the glass is real snug. Also, it's clearly faster than my VDX. Now for the modem. Installation was a breeze. However, I have add to reset three or four times due to "Fatal Errors". The errors only occured when inserting or removing the modem, so before I remove the modem I go to the Minstrel Icon and perform a shutdown. So far I haven't seen any more fatal errors and haven't had to reset my VPL. In addition, removing the Minstrel from my VPL is kind clumsy...wish it had a release lever like PCMCIA card slots on laptops. OmniSky service is great. Navigation is simple and content is easy to get to. Lastly, when the Minstrel is attached to my VPL I can still send and receive beams, where as Palm Vx users must remove their modem to send and receive beams.

Angry Continued issues

I have continued to have issues with the OmniSky/Minstrel. I have experienced Fatal Errors every 5-10 pages and have had my entire Prism wiped twice. Hint: Buy Backup Buddy. I went through all the setting of connection pref's and Minstral settings. No help. With Tech Sppt on the line it continued to lock continuously. I was on the line with OmniSky until 2am on Friday. They were great as far as Tech Sppt goes, but I am still waiting on a response from them as to my next steps.

More as the plot thickens...

I have Minstrel S with Prism using Omnisky. I am happy with it. Would be nice if Minstrel S is slimmer etc but that is best they can do. Better than the bigger Minstrel hardware I had on Palm IIIx.

Would be nice to have Omnisky software in color but I believe they are working on it. That Omnisky software is similar to Palm VII web clipping application and it really works good as the data is very compact allow for quicker downloading to Prism. I tried all Internet applications on Minstrel S/Omnisky and all of them work very good except AOL software.

http://www.aol.com/anywhere/aolforpalm/home.adp
is where I got AOL software for Prism. When I click on Instant Message icon, it proceed to dial out and it really tries to dial/send phone nbr to Minstrel S and it was
stuck at that point. I tried everything I could to get AOL software to work with Minstrel S but I could not.

Any tips to get AOL software to work with Minstrel S?

Thanks

JC,

I too wish the Minstral was smaller and the apps were in color, but I still love it.

I have been using version 1.0 of the AIM software all weekend. I sometime have to try to connect twice, but I am always able to get in. Maybe, you should re-install after you delete teh one you have now.

I can't seem to use the AOL mail for VII or AOL mail for the other palms.
