Does the Platinum use a slightly modified "standard" Visor serial connector, or are you referring to a software problem with the serial interface for the Platinum?

the physical interface is the same, but if you use a visor-powered cable (instead of the other-device-powered standard cradle) with a platinum (and you have to use such a cable for many serial consoles) and the device at wich you are attached draws too much power from the HS line the stupid platinum go straight into hotsync

I think it's a workaroundable issue, but af for now i know of no working cables for sale.

This is the _only_ reason for wich I will not buy a platinum, since now I'm VERY interested in the columbia I'm awaiting someone to discover if it has the same flaw. (and I'm praying it has not )

This just reminded me of something... is there a Palm program that can turn a bunch of random letters into words? That could be useful for making mnemonic devices.

Try a search for "anagram" at PalmGear.

Much of this post was accurate. I'm betting that the rest is accurate too.

Crikey!! Using just netsol, AOL or Google Yellow Pages, and MapQuest, you can find anyone who has a website's house! That's really, really scary. You could be bombed or something. But, like a wise man said, if you use the interent, you pretty much give up your privacy.

Serial cable for Platinum

Earlier in the thread there was some discussion about the problems with serial cables for platinums. I know of a few ways around the problem:

One way is to power the RS232 interface electronics. There are cables available that allow you to connect an external power supply to the RS232 chip.

Another way is to use a cable that draws power just from the Transmit pin, and not from the Hotsync pin. That also works.

Anyone interested in cables like these can do so by emailing [email protected]. (There's a picture of the externally powered one on www.pcables.com.)

I wouldn't hold your breath on any new models being announced tomorrow. I have a hunch that we won't see any new devices for a month or so. There normally is a month or two that goes by which gives Handspring the oppurtunity to move some of the recently discounted units. My .02 worth!

I think we CAN expect a couple new models. The staples memos have been correct so far.

But we can only wait and see.

thank you btabatow, that's what I was looking for (I think you mean the "PDCH-M9EPOW-6 6" Visor Power/Data Cable ", right?), since it's the only platinum-compatible cable on the website I think it will work

ok, now I've found the cable... let's wait for the columbia

"Ace" sounds like a HS brand, but "Columbia?". No way, HS likes it simple. 1-2 Syllables, not 4. Also, "Columbia" doesn't evoke anything. Solo: simple. Deluxe: Extra. Platinum: Top-of-the-line. Prism: Colors. Edge: Thin. Ace: Good, cool. Columbia: Cocaine.
Heh, "Platinum" has three syllables and one gets coke from Colombia... Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Anyways, it's good that they've lower the prices now regardless to its relationship to new models... just in time for all the students to get well-functioning cheaper older models.

Yea, but lots of people say it Plat-num, not Pl-at-i-num.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

they still haven't been announced....that'll kill this thread in a hurry

Thumbs down Monday Morning and nothing..!!!

So Ed? Where are the new Visors? I don't see anything new from Handspring.com

Maybe Handspring realized that they were making a mistake in not having an advance PDA with high color resolution. Yes, that was we were expecting from Handspring, instead of some plain old fashion grayscale PDA. We have to accept that the future is C O L O R .

However, I've seen that the Prism is the only PDA that now is selling $50 dowm from its original price. Maybe Handspring believe that the Prism is still the best color PDA, which is not true.
