As a former techincal writer, I can answer this one...

"Read The Freaking Manual".

(word substitution made for use in a "family" environment)

Sigh, no one ever reads the manuals...

Ugh! I hate those people. These are the people that come to ask you how to do something like "how do i send an attachement in my email" I start to show them and they go "wait...wait...let me write this down!"

It's a TWO STEP PROCESS! JUST PAY ATTENTION!

I've been there, very frustrating. However....

I find that it is easier and less frustrating for me if I show them but they are more likely to learn if I talk them through it, letting them drive.

When I was out of the office on a call, the senior tech would take over for me, his favorite thing was to have the users get out their manual and as he would call it (to us), "Let's have story time..", he would have them read along with him in the manual, page by page till they could solve their own problems, i.e. "now turn to page 1, read the first paragraph, etc..", he had a twisted sense of humor.. The funny thing is people thought he was wonderful and had no idea what his real intentions were.. I always got a chuckle out of that..

yeah

I know exactly how you mean: Helping someone over the phone for hours when it would take you only a couple minutes if you could only BE there. :P It's all about patience!!

Wink

I got one too...

I'm not even an "official" computer support tech at my company but since I can successfully navigate W95/98/NT and OS8/9, I get asked how to do all those simple things like:

1. how to change your background/wallpaper (don't people even use the right mouse button?)
2. how to connect to the network drive
3. how to attach files to e-mail (and yes, they write it on post-its!)

And then there are those users that don't understand that your NT login is different than a security login for an application.

My pet peave however is users who put all their documents in one folder on the desktop, no matter what application and then tell me they lost their file. There is always an amalgamation of Word, Excel, e-mail attachments, pdf, and text files all in one folder which they insist on viewing by the large icon so there's no order. I try to explain that subdirectories (I say "subfolder" so it doesn't sound too techie) will help them manage their files, but to no avail. After I use the "find file" function, I can only shrug my shoulders and let them go on as they were. I look forward to when they can't add anymore files to the one folder, so I can say "I told you so 6 months ago!).

Thanks for letting me rant

p

Red face Ahh the Find File function!!

If only I could get my users to use and understand Find (I have no hope that they will actually intelligently manage their files). I don't know how many times a week someone asks me to help them find a file that they lost. I try to explain to them what I'm doing ("There's a great little feature in windows...""this is a wildcard...") but they don't care, they just want me to do it for them. This is not rocket science! This is a huge waste of my time.

Oh well, here is my new mantra:
Their ignorance is my job security.
