Question

I use a Visor Deluxe to connect to me Outlook '97 e-mail, and have never had a problem. Now my son bought another Visor, and he uses Hotmail for his e-mail. Does anyone hotsync using Hotmail? Can someone explain to me how to set it up? Can the Hotmail messages be forwarded to an Outlook account? Thanks for your help! David

You have to have an account that you can access through a mail app such as outlook express or netscape mail.

I believe you can access Hotmail through Outlook Express (perhaps one of the few benefits of having Microsoft owning everything). I'm not much of a Windows user, but can you set up two seperate Outlook Express applications on your computer...one for you, one for your son?

I tried to use Outlook Express to pull in Hotmail about 8 months ago. It is built into Outlook Express and MS does own both (one of the reasons I decided to open a Hotmail account... I thought it would be one of the few benefits of having MS owning everthing). However, I have never been able to get it to work. I always get an error.

I emailed support and they sent back a message acknowledging the problem and that the were working on it. Thinking it would be a day or two, because I could not imagine they would let a problem like this go on, I have yet to get an answer. And that was about 8 months ago. Every two to three months I've emailed again and nothing. Pretty disgusted. But I guess that's normal with Microsoft.

With Outlook Express, you can set up separate email accounts. I've done this with my ISP. But I just can't get Hotmail.

You should be able to use Outlook Express or Outlook 97 to access your hotmail account as long as you know the hotmail server name and settings. I was using Outlook Express to access my Hotmail account until a week or so ago. Unfortunately one of the DLL files has become corrupted or something and Outlook Express will no longer load. If I can find somewhere to reinstall Outlook Express from I should be able to tell you what settings to use.

Lightbulb

Configuring Outlook Express for Hotmail is dead easy.... ie if youre using Outlook Express 5 or later... that means you'll need the new IE 5.

Make sure you already have a Hotmail account.. that makes it easier.... You can also set up the hotmail account from within Outlook Express also... but its more of a pain..

Here are the steps...

1. From the Tools Menu select Accounts.
2. Click on Add -> Mail...
3. Enter a display Name...<Your Name>
4. Click "I already have an e-mail address..."
Enter "[email protected]" for the Email address.
5. Click on next... "E-mail Server Names Screen". The incoming mail server will be set to HTTP, and provider will be set to Hotmail. Click Next
6. Internet Mail Logon Screen. Double check your Account Name. Uncheck "Remember Password".. Click Next and youre done !!!

Additionally you can change the settings to download only new mail.. or only some of the folders.. or headers only... etc....

But remember for all these to work.. you'll need Outlook Express 5.

Thumbs up

The last post was right on, but I have another solution if all else fails. Get a free account at Visto.com and you can access that account directly with the visor. With your Visto account you can also check any other POP3 account or any other MAPI account. The ability to do all this through Visto is great and their pages are easy to use. You can also forward your other accounts to your Visto account if that is an option.
