-- IR range on VDx? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=883)
I installed the demo of Omniremote on my IVDx and proceeded to learn the buttons of my television remote. I was soon dismayed to find that the apparent range of the Visor's IR beam seemed to be about 2 1/2-3 feet. Beyond that absolutly nothing worked. I checked it on various other IR controled devices and found them all to be the same. Beyond 3 feet, nothing worked at all.
Is this the range of the visor's IR beam? Can it really be that crappy or do I just have a defective unit???
wondering...
I have tried mine using Omniremote 1.15 and it has worked up to 15 feet that is as far as I have tried it. It may even work further than this 15 feet I experienced.
I would check the version of OmniRemote your using.

I second the "make sure you're using the latest version" comment. That would be 1.15.
Also, try some different settings in the preferences / record carrier frequency setting. Mine's at 39200.
I get 15 feet easy. And haven't found an unlearnable button yet. Well worth the registration fee.

My experience is:

Note that using different frequencies than what the auto selector recommends can greatly improve the range.
P.S. If you've tested it then it's been 1.15. 1.14 doesn't work, period.
P.P.S. By the way, there's a bug with 1.15. If you press the HotSync key while in OmniRemote, you get a Fatal Exception Error.

I have had two visor's now, and the IR of my first seems to have had a MUCH stronger beam. I demoed omniremote and could control various electronics from across rooms. With my new visor I decided to test again, and could only control from about two feet. I didn't mess with frequencies either time.
Not a big deal to me because omniremote is only a novelty that I don't need, but I thought this to be interesting information non-the-less.
tyler
I've compared Omniremote on both a Palm with 2Mb+IR upgrade and a VDx (both set to Auto frequency with the same remote codes and fully charged batteries) and find that the Palm can get 22 feet easily, while the VDx is around 16 feet.
There used to be a small freeware(?) program called IrMonitor that you can use to measure IR strength, but that would mean you'll need a second Palm-compatible to run it... Anyway, I can't locate it on PalmCentral or PalmGear...
