Thought all (or at least some) would like to know:

The July issue of MacAddict (which I received in today's mail) includes a brief (3 pages in total) article titled "Handspring Wilderness Handbook."

the author was sent into the woods for a day (10a-6p, approx) with a Visor Prism and the following modules:

eyemodule
Geode GPS module
MiniJam w/ 64MB card
OmniSky Minstrel S wireless modem
Handspring backup module
Pocket Express Entertainment Pack
Merriam-Webster Dictionary
The Medical Letter Handbook of Adverse Drug Interactions
Holy Bible (King James Version)

Plus a Stowaway, the GameFace, and a 5-lb tub of Twizzlers (Strawberry).

I'm unclear on the objective of the article (other than, possibly, to make the writer look like a complete and utter moron). The interesting part is the camoflage Visor picture that goes with it (a Photoshopped V or VDX).

"Wilderness"? Right. The Merriam Webster Dictionary is my module of choice for Wilderness Trips. Great for the 3 days spent in a tent waiting for the blizzard to pass while traversing the Brooks Range or on the first ascent of the tallest unclimbed vertical face in North America. Sounds like something silly. Now if someone had that equipment (minus the Twizzlers - don't get me wrong - I love that candy but there are a lot better choices for "wilderness" survival.) and was participating in the TV show "Lost" then I might be intrigued. Chances are the author has never been in a real Wilderness Area (as formed resulting from the Wilderness Act of 1964) and I assure you that the Omnisky product is useless in any such designated Wilderness Area. Perhaps "Outdoor Handbook" would have been a better title. Just a pet peeve. Calling any forest or field "wilderness" that is. Diatribe done.

FWIW, the author is Jack Miller. Any of you Mac types out there may be familiar with his excellent running Internet serial "As the Apple Turns," to be found at http://www.appleturns.com

It has a unique view of the often (usually) irrational goings-on in Cupertino, and treats the ups-and-downs of Apple Computer as a soap opera. Many of us get an AtAT fix daily.

His "survival in the woods" article was written in the same vein. If you don't get it, that's fine. I don't think he's a moron. I found it to be a funny premise for a review of the modules and software mentioned.
