-- Palm at U. of South Dakota (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14644)

I just read the story about how the University of South Dakota is having all its students get and use a Palm handheld. This is the first time I have heard of a college campus -- other than a law or medical school -- having its students use PDA's as standard equipment across the board. This fall, I'll be starting on the faculty at a college that uses technology integrally throughout its curriculum and I've often thought that handhelds would work nicely in such an environment -- so this story is of great interest to me. I wonder if any of you could answer or address the following questions:

1. What kind(s) of Palm device are the USD students going to be using? I gather that they are Palm, Inc. devices as opposed to Sony, Handspring, or Handera models.

2. What kinds of software will they be using?

3. Any ideas on just exactly how USD plans to implement PDA technology in the classroom in ways other than just an organizer/planner/ebook reader?

I've said it before and reiterate it now -- Handspring could really open up a vast untapped market niche if it started an educational program like Palm's and really pushed it on college campuses. Palm has grants available for K-12 implementation but not much for higher ed.

Thanks!

Since Palm has all that excess supply I am sure USD got a good deal.
