Lightbulb New Handspring models to be announced soon

There are 2 new models as far as I know. One is called Handspring Ace (I believe it's to replace the Deluxe) and the other one is called Handspring Columbia (supposed to replace the Platinum). The Columbia is supposed to have 16 MB of RAM. Haven't heard anything about the new Edge (color) just yet.

Where did you get this info? How reliable is the source? Any pictures to backup your claim? "Too be announced soon".... what is "soon"? a week, month, 6 months?

Yeesh. The 'columbia'? Who did they hire to do their product branding?

I kinda find this rumor hard to believe. I am assuming by your "to replace Deluxe/Platinum" statements that either they are price to replace said models or that "Ace" has OS 3.1 and "Columbia" has OS 3.5. Then again, you didn't provide many other details to go on other than "Columbia" is supposed to have 16 MB of RAM. All of this kinda seems backward to me with exception of the increased ram. I can see for example replacing the Platinum with a same sized model with better screen resolution and more RAM and have the Platinum replace the Deluxe. In other words, discontinue the Deluxe and make the Platinum $199. Or do that but don't discontinue the Deluxe, drop that to $149/$169, and discontinue the Solo. I believe this was mentioned before on this forum but I am just reitterating this. But to make a new Deluxe doesn't really make much business sense.

If this is true, either edd left out very juicy details or handspring is about to make another Edge-sized mistake.

I work at a local retail store and we got a fax in yesterday concerning the display and price. Also the models that are going to be discontinued (Palm Vx is one of them). They didn't send any pictures just a short description of each new models. The release date and the price is to be annouced soon. I'll keep you guys posted if that's what you want.

The story happened at PalmStation, which is frankly the first thing to happen there in awhile.

Looks like the source is Staples and CompUsa documents. Shaky, I say. Handspring is good at keeping things close to home. If these people really have something, it must be ready to spring right now, and we'll get an announcement really soon. There's NO WAY HS will announce anything without being ready to ship.

"Ace" sounds like a HS brand, but "Columbia?". No way, HS likes it simple. 1-2 Syllables, not 4. Also, "Columbia" doesn't evoke anything. Solo: simple. Deluxe: Extra. Platinum: Top-of-the-line. Prism: Colors. Edge: Thin. Ace: Good, cool. Columbia: Cocaine.

That said, if this is so, will they be edge-based? Will they be at the same or a lower price-point, they better be, if the rumored m125 is really coming!

Edd: Are you the one who submitted to PalmStation? Can you scan & post the fax, PLEASE!?

Yes i'm the one that posted at Palmstation and right now i've just called my friend at work if he has a copy but he said he left it at home. So I'll let you know as soon as i go into work today. M125 is in our inventory system already!!

Angry

And I just bought a Platinum Oh well, if the only thing thats better about Columbia is ram, I can be okay with that. I got the MemPlug iwth PiDirect. with that and a 8 MB Flash Module, I practically have 80 MB of memory.

i echo dietrichbohn sentiments about the name, "Columbia." There was a rumor a month and half ago about some new Visors come out called the Visor Twist and the Visor Snap. See, those are Visor names. Snap makes the most sense because of what these handhelds do, they have modules that you can "snap" in the back. Ace isn't bad but it ain't all that great either.

That's what i said to my friend at work when we saw the fax together. What kind of name is Columbia? Oh well. Nothing much we can do now about the name.

Posted by septimus on 08-09-2001 06:30 PM:

Ok.. Well, thanks for the info, but I'm officially an unbeliever until I see more evidence or more information.

Thumbs up

I apologize for being so skeptical, edd. With that whole Visor Snap/Twist thing in June, I have come to really doubt all of these new model rumors until there is proof other than a URL was registered.

Since I just bought the Platinum, I don't think I will go out to get the Columbia but it does sound neat that they are putting more ram in their handhelds.

You said there was a description for each. Anything you remember about them that you can tell us?

Exclamation NDA

Edd-

Retailers sign non-disclosure agreements with their suppliers. Are you aware how much trouble you could get in by posting this info?

Don't worry. I don't blame you with all these false info. flying around on the web. I just pass on to you of what I saw. Currently I don't have the actual document in my hand but will let you know later.

Ace and Columbia

I work for Staples and in this weeks news letter the two new handsprings are mentioned. there is also some other news.

the deluxe and regular visor will be discontinued in October.

the platinum will have a retail price of $199 on 8/19.

the edge will drop to $299 on 8/19.

the handspring ace will replace the deluxe and have 8 megs of memory.

the handspring Columbia will have 16 megs of memory and a 45mhz processor.

no sku numbers have been assigned to the new models but more information is to follow.
