Question

I've got the USB cradle and I would like to setup the Palm software on my Laptop which is NT 4.0? does anyone know if the USB to serial adapter works for this application as it does for mice, joysticks etc...

thanks

Bill

If I'm not mistaken, there is no such thing as an adapter to connect a USB device to a serial port. This has something to do with the USB power requirements - a standard serial port doesn't supply it. There are USB adapters that allow connection of serial devices, however.

As for NT 4.0, you will most likely need a serial cradle since 4.0 has no USB support.

well I've got one of these wonderful adapters in my hand, its came with a nice new snazzy mouse that is USB but when I put the adapter on it I can plug it into the round 9 pin or so serial mouse port on the back of my NT laptop and it works so I was checking to see if anyone has tried this with the cradle (i will tonight!)

I'll let you know what I find out.

thanks

That's not really a USB-to-Serial "adapter"... the mouse itself contains both the USB and serial interfaces and the adapter just connects the proper lines to the PC. I don't think it will work as you hope... I would be interested in hearing if it does, however.

yup...no go on the adapter

I guess my only other option is to get the IR port on my Dell Lattitude CPx working with my Visor Deluxe IR port. So I'll start looking in here but if anyone has a pointer please pass it along

thanks

Why not go to your local Staple's or CompUSA and get a serial cradle? You can also upgrade to Win2K, get the Handspring Desktop Update, and use the USB.

Or you could install linux, and apply the backport of the USB from the devel kernel to 2.2.14, and use it like that.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Don't hit me, please. (It works for me!)

Dude the round plug for your mouse isnt a serial plug. Thats the PS/2 port and you could seriously jank up your comp if you try to send too much power to it. The serial port is shaped like a rectangle.
Here is a serial port

This is a PS2 port
