-- OmniSky & Platnium Only?!??! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8932)

In omniSky's ad in the latest edition of Newsweek, it says "Now with Versions for the Palm V and Handspring Visor Platnium"

It's platnium only?!?!?!

Post It's a springboard...

My contact at Novatel has been using the Minstrel S with his Visor Deluxe for several months now. He assures me that it works fine with the Deluxe, Platinum and the Prism. He also tells me that OmniSky replaces the default browser on the modem with their own browser (which I hear is very good).

Don't worry, be happy.

For more details check out the $100 Rebate thread.

Among Omnisky's value added software, is the software needed to run PQAs. My assumption is the Novatel hardware works perfectly fine on a Deluxe. But this software requires something more than PalmOS 3.1.

I just got off the phone with OmniSky and Novatel. The salesman at Novatel says the Minstrel S *WILL* work with all 4 types of Visors. The salesman at OmniSky says that they only support the Platinum and Prism.

So, I guess the PQA software is the culprit.

So can we use it, but have no tech support?

That's what it sounds like. I'll wait to see what happens when they ship. I just hope they still have that deal going on when I get conformation.

Angry Coincidence?

OK, now the truth comes out. Maybe the wireless modules are just now starting to come out now because the visor and VDX were never really well suited to work with them in the first place (at least not in their unmodified form.) Is this planned obsolesence, or just me being paranoid and angry that to use the wireless modules I need to either buy a new VDX, which I already have, a garish silver colored Platinum or a much too expensive (for my budget) Prism.

Maybe I should sue somebody. (only joking) I guess I'll have to wait for prices to come down on the VisorPhone.

Anyone with any technical knowledge care to comment on the VDX's wireless-worthiness?

Angry Heck with 'em

I'm more than a little ticked off that OmniSky has decided to abandon the VDX and by extension, me. Since the hardware is known to be compatible, this strikes me as tremendous foolishness on their part. I was going to wait for the OmniSky unit (to save money and to use the better browser), but now they've lost my business.

Have you guys read http://www.handspring.com/support/ts_glenayre.jhtml?

It looks like handspring will come up with a way to exchange your Visors if you dont like the way they work with active link minstrel s.

My Treo 600 is my phone, my PDA, my watch, and my MP3 player. Oh yeah, I take a picture once in a while with it. Convergence is such a great thing.

It most certainly works with the Deluxe.

Visit this thread to see photos of it in a Deluxe:

Granted it wasn't Omnisky's, but the modem is exactly the same and will be used by Yada Yada, Omnisky and whoever else is licensing the Minstrel S from Novatel. It worked, and worked well.

I imagine most of the commotion has to do with the RF emissions. There is a distinction between "it works", and whether the FCC is happy about it. I heard something about an exchange program for Visor owners so not all is lost.

Cool They will exchange...

Hello All,

I just got off the phone with a supervisor at Handspring. And this is what they will do. If you buy a Glenayre @ctiveLink and/or Omnisky Novatel Minstrel S modules.

And you have problems you can call and they will setup a swap for a new/fixed Visor same model & color.

Here is a link to the info on the www site.

I think I will be ordering the Omnisky next week...

Later,
M

Angry The Scoop From OmniSky

I spent twenty minutes on the phone with OmniSky tech support. They're clueless about Visors in general, and told me repeatedly that they "don't support it yet".

OmniSky's hardware is, as we know, not at issue. Their software requires PalmOS 3.3. They claim that the VDX cannot be upgraded to PalmOS 3.3.

The way I see it: Handspring owes VDX owners some OS upgrades, and I'd be surprised if a RAM upgrade to PalmOS 3.3 were not possible. Also, OmniSky would be very foolish to not make a version of the software that works with the PalmOS 3.1 on the VDX. Even if some functionality (like the PQA usage) were lost, it seems pretty stupid for them to alienate what amounts to the entire installed base.

I'd sure like to know if somebody has successfully installed the OmniSky software on a VDX.

here's what Omnisky's support dept. told me:

OmniSky will not be compatible with the Handspring Deluxe because of the operating speed.

hmm... if that's the only problem I wonder if over clocking would help.
