weird behaviour from my visor deluxe

Hi,

A friend of mine wants to sell me a Visor Deluxe which he bought a couple
of years ago for $50. I thought it was an OK deal, considering a new one
is 200 and up. I'm trying it out but I'm seeing a lot of weird behaviour
and I don't know what is causing it.

Sometimes I don't do anything and menus pop up and down. I'll be in the
Calendar, for example, and the years will move forward or back, or the
week, all this on its own. Sometimes I"ll press the screen with the
stylus but nothing happens. Today I noticed something weird. I turned it
on and the displayed time was about 20 minutes slow. The all of a sudden,
it jumped to the current time. Sometimes I have the impression that it
maintains stylus clicks in memory and executes them much later. I did a
few warm resets but no cold resets yet (I want to try to sync it first).

I've also seen times when I click a button or icon, the button or icon lights up but nothing happens. Even if I press it repeatedly, it doesn't do anything

Has anyone else sen this behaviour? Is the VIsor defective? Does it need
a patch? How can I determine this?

I'd like to post some version info but it's acting up right now.

Thanks for any help,

L

This is a fairly common occurence on the VDx. The display is not updated while the unit is in sleep mode. When powered up, the display simply re-appears and it's not until the clock updates itself that the time display actually changes on screen.

As for the other problems you noted, has the unit been sitting idle for an extended period of time? If so, a fresh set of batteries and a hard reset might be needed. This will remove everything from the VDx and return it to its out-of-the-box state.

Other things that could be wrong are software conflicts and maybe even hardware issues. It's difficult to say.

As long as there is no necessary data stored on it (or if you have access to the backup data), I would be inclined to remove the batteries overnight (to fully erase the memory), pop in a fresh set, and see if it acts the same in its initial state.

Handspring has just reduced the price of the Deluxe to $129.

Actually, it had. My friend tells me that he'd left it lying about for a while and when he turned it on, it died. He replaced the battery but didn't reinstall anything.

When he gave it to me, it had been reset and nothing was in it (not even the upgrade). I added some data (which I can reenter) so I guess I could live with that.

Ugh, that's what I'm hoping against.

Ok, I'll see if I can HotSync it first then try that.

Which is still $200 Canadian. :-)

Thanks,

Yes I have seen these types of problems before. I had a Deluxe that did the exact same things. It was caused by a defective digitizer. The fault caused the Deluxe to think that I was tapping the stylus in or near the upper right hand corner of the screen. The problem would come and go so it was hard to track down. I eventually confirmed the problem by using TealPaint. I started with a blank screen and set the paint tool to the "pencil" with black foreground color. I just let it sit there and every so offen a pixel would "draw by itself" in or near the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Had to get the Visor exchanged - it was still under warrantee.

Your's could have the same problem. Just to make absolutely sure it is not something else, take the batteries out of the Deluxe for at least an hour to completely wipe the unit. Then start using it again without installing any Hacks or software that messes with the OS. If the problem shows up within a few days, it's a bad digitizer.
