Okay, you all seem to have about a ton more experience than I do. My last electronic organizer was a Sharp Wizard that died on me along with what felt like a lifetime of unrecoverable information (yeah, I know I should have backed it up etc.)

I was inches away fron buying a Palm IIIx when I heard about the visor now I don't know if I really need 8 MB of memory or will I be sorry 3 months from now when my 2MB of memory bellyflop off a new springboard.

My question is this for those of you who know, when the ad says approx 400 to-do items, 200 emails, 1000 memos, should it say 400 to-do items AND 200 emails or should it say 400 to-do items OR 200 emails.

May be a dumb question but it will help me understand what the real memory numbers reflect.

Those numbers seem to be "if you store only email, you can store 200 of them", but I'm not sure. I did a bit of math (just dividing only) and came up with "1000 memos of 2097 bytes each". The todo items seemed to be totally to big, but the other things looked Ok.

I bought a PalmIII (used) a while ago. It has 2M. I have 498K free. I have a bunch of things on it I like to keep but don't *need* (games, and rarely used applications like a pocket spreadsheet). I have a 187K improved date book appication I doubt I will need on a Visor (it's data book sounds like it does all I bought the spiffy datebook app for my III for). Likewise for the 58K calculator (I think exactly the one bundled with the Visor). So for me 2M hasn't been a real problem, but could eventually become one.

I went for the 8M version because it seemed like such a good deal (less then 2x the price for 4x the memory AND I get to pick a color AND a free dead cow case).

For most people, 2MB is ALOT of RAM in one of these devices. You can think about it like 2 GB of free HD space on a PC. After you install Win 98 and Office 2K and all the other apps that come with your computer if you have 2GB of free space most people will rarely have a problem. The 8MB of RAM is like an additional 8GB on your PC. You will probably never fill it up. The price on the Visor Deluxe is AWESOME so if you can affors it I would adVISE you to buy it. If you are strapped for cash take the regular Visor and if you even need extra RAM then you can buy a flash card with 8MB for $99.

2Mb seems massive to me. I still have a PalmPilot Personal with only 512K RAM but it holds 2 years of business appoinments and 801 contacts, along with a few essential add-ins. Mind you, I'll be buying the 8Mb Visor in graphite asap.

2mb is more than enough for all your personal memos, PIM data and many applications too! However, if you intend to use the unit for the reading of e-texts (see www.memoware.com) then be advised that some of these files are over 1.5mb in size. The 8mb unit is not much more expensive than the 2mb unit. You won't regret having 8mb to play around with, but you may regret buying a 2mb unit, especially if you do want to store many e-texts or use Avantgo.

i think in the end its ultimately what you want to do with your PDA. price consideration aside, the palm V is great for general purposes (contacts, appointments) cuz its light and small and 2mb is more than enough.

if you want to surf the net on your pda, listen to mp3, attach a gps and include an encyclopedia to read in your spare time, then the visor deluxe seems to be your best bet.

.... get the visor deluxe !
