-- DRAM Problem - Handspring has a Test (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1450)

The DRAM problem that is being reported today all over the web is affecting Visor Deluxe as well. If you have a Visor Deluxe that shipped between January and March of 2000, you may want to go to the Handspring site and run the test to see if your unit is defective. Here is the link:http://www.handspring.com/support/ts_visor_test_download.asp

uh oh. It just said Test complete. A potential component issue may exist. Please contact Handspring Customer care for additional information. What's this mean? I guess I'll call them up. Maybe this explains those times it locks up and gives me fatal errors on "occasion" (I never thought it was that bad--but maybe I can get it fixed all together! Go Handspring! You RULE!

I just called them. He said that they will post a patch in about 2 weeks to fix it. He said if the error was "causing me to lose important data regularly" that he could send out a replacement. I would like to get a different color--but I'm not that mean . I declined.

Mine tested OK as well (whew! And I've got 3 MB left free)

I would not be surprised if the patch is very similar, if not the same, to the patch Palm is currently working on for their units.

Question

Even though mine tested fine, what DRAM problem? Curiosity has the best of me.

Ok, mine tested fine. Now what? Do we delete the test?

So do you guys think I should ask for a replacement or what? If it's a patch than I'm gonna have a little bit of a hinderence that all of you with non-defective visors have .

Wow. Just read this stuff about Palm's DRAM problems and my Visor got a little nervous. Had to do about 5 soft resets today :-)

Actually Krue, it "could" affect models shipped between January and June, according to there web site. Unfortunately, mine is affected. Not really sure how a patch will fix a memory issue but for those of us affected, lets hope it works!! I take it that palm is also experiencing the same problem. Purchased my VDx in May, in case anyone is interested. The problem has not really affected me that much though!!
Bottom line---Still a GREAT product!!

Cool

"Test completed. No problem detected."

Mine was received in November, 1999. Although the RAM is not defective, the plastic detachable cover sure sucks (keeps developing a crack right were it snaps in at the top)!

For those interested in getting more info on the DRAM problem, go to www.pdabuzz.com for the whole story.

My Visor failed the test I called tech support, and got the same answer--they'll post a patch in 2 weeks. I'm so attached to mine & don't want to exchage. Luckily I haven't have real serious crash so I'll wait till the patch come out. Should we start "Parents of Visor w/ DRAM disorder" support group?

Exclamation

I tested positive.

I wonder if the memory problem has anything to do with a nasty series of hard reset problems I had last month. I more or less eliminated any hacks as the problem. (In the cases where a hard reset was required, my VDx would, upon a soft reset, go into an endless loop, flashing the PalmOS screen. Has anyone else had this problem?) Thank goodness for my backup springboard.

For peace of mind I asked for a replacement.

On Replacements - wonder what the odds are that they will ship replacement units with the defect but will have loaded the patch?

Hmmmmmm????????????????

nice point there stitcher. We'll notice it anyway if there's a patch. It's a software patch right?

The test says that my visor is fine, and I'm happy about it.

Cool

I'm clean, but then again, I got my Visor last November.
However, I have to check my wife's Visor when I get home, I got that one only a couple of months ago.

Kudos to Handspring for getting the test up on their site so quickly!

I'm about to test mine as I type this. But I wonder, if I do have a problem, how a patch will fix it. Perhaps the patch simply allocates that part of the memory to the OS and claims it as used? That way, no other program would try to use it. Anyone have any better ideas how the patch might fix it?

Just finished my test (took all of about 3 seconds) and it said there were no problems. Whew! Id idn't think I was having a problem since I've never really had any fatal errors outside of bad software.

OK, I've got the bug. I bought mine in March and guess I didn't practice safe surfing on the Avantgo sites. A software patch seems kind of like the corrective lenses they put on the Hubble telescope so it didn't have vision like Mr. Magoo. I'd hate to ship my VDX back to Handspring though so maybe living with a bandaid stuck on my software isn't too bad.
