Large Files

Hi All,
I just wish there were a way the HotSync Manager could transfer large files (larger than the Visor internal memory) or HotSync directly to the 16 MB Flash Module?
Something like a auto detector during the HotSync operation - that will display "Couldn't upload file(s) to the unit internal memory; Send file(s) to Flash Module, YES or NO?

YES!!!
Though this may be due entirely to the Palm HotSync architecture and therefore less likely to be a priority. Anyone know if this is a feature that Handspring could build-in somehow either by software or HotSync hardware?

By the way, the Matchbookdrive is shipping...received mine on Saturday.

Did you see the info of standard launcher??

When I check the info of Applications V.3.5H,
It says "Free Memory:~ of 10797K".. What's wrong?
Why isn't it 15xxxK? But my filemover says correctly.

Wish somebody's good tips!!!

I doubt anything is wrong. The "Info" screen doesn't give the correct capacity on my module either. I am guessing that it has something to do with seeing application files vs. data files. My capacity is listed as 219K which is basically the same size as the only applications I have on the module (FileMover and one other app) though this may be just a coincidence.

There's no reason Handspring couldn't create a "hotsync to flash" conduit. You'd need to be pretty careful with the file layout, though... the normal Palm OS database layout is unlikely to be well suited to stop-and-start writing on a block device, so the conduit would have to prepare a chunk of flash on the Palm side, then assemble the databases to be synced on the PC side to match that flash... and you REALLY wouldn't want to interrupt the process.

The Handspring FileMover app that is on their springboard flash module and the Hagiwara FileMover app that is on their 16mb flash module are NOT the same app. Here is what Hagiwara said in response to my inquiry:

"Our File Mover and Handspring one are different. You cannot upgrade our File Mover by downloading from Handspring web site."

The CF adapter and CF memory card is PURELY for storage of info (at least for now). To access data or applications stored in the CF cards, you have to copy them back into the visor's internal memory then run them. On the hand, the 8 or 16 mb modules allow you DIRECTLY access data and applications stored in the module without the extra step and time needed to copy the info. to the visor's internal memory.

If you have information or applications that you are constantly accessing, like reference books, then I don't think that the CF card storage method is feasible. However, if you have information that you only need occasionally, like maps or pictures, then I think you may want to look into the CF card.

I've been struggling to think of one good use for compact flash or any other "storage only" devices. Nothing that I use regularly do I want to have to shuttle on and off such storage devices.

But I recently created a gradebook database using ThinkDB. I keep a semester's worth of student records in it. I teach the same class each semester, so in thinking about "next" semester, it occured to me it would be nice to archive the old records. I'm frequently curious about past classes and how they did compared to current ones. Having some way to "look back" at data, rather than simply delete it when I start a new class seems great to me.

So consider the compact flash module for archival purposes. Perhaps your last five years of tax records?

Compacting Freezes--possible work-around

Modules 100% full??

I had another compacting mishap like the ones described earlier on this thread by PurpleMD, Fat_Man and I. This time, I noticed some strange FfMg Dbcache files on the RAM after the soft reset. Based on this observation, I have a suspicion that the RAM is used, at least occasionally, as a temporary storage space during "Compacting." If the RAM is being used and is equally as full as the module, this could offer an explanation for the screen freezes: there isn't anywhere to temporarily put the files during defragmenting.

While attempting to transfer files to the module, I have since cleared the RAM of space equal to the largest file on the module. After 5 intentional compacts (all below 100kb), I have not had another freeze. In a final test, I had 12kb left on my module and I transferred a 12kb file without any problem leaving 0kb left on the module. I will add that I did this test with 7.1kb on the RAM.

This theory would tend to explain why I had prior success loading the module close to capacity by transferring the largest file last since I likely had a good portion of my RAM free.

For anyone that would like (unverified) suggestions on how to cram their modules 100% full:
-In general, move the programs/data that you do not intend to delete anytime soon to the module
-Clear your RAM as much as you can (I kept an equal amount as the largest file on the module but this may not be totally necessary)
-Load the module full incrementally by syncing data to your RAM then moving it (again, trying to keep your RAM as free as you can so as to anticipate "Compacting")
-Reload your RAM when your module is full

If anyone has an inclination to tempt fate and cram their modules 100% full, please test this tentative hypothesis and post your experiences (good or bad). Keep track of:
**The file size(s) that you are transferring
**The free RAM and
**The space left on the module

My question is for anyone who runs the 5mcc (k2 version) and/or lexidrugs from their flash (I have the Hagiwara 16mb flash): Understanding that one can not write directly to the flash module, for example adding notes, is there a way to leave the personal db or notes portion on the internal memory without causing a fatal error? I tried it, added a note, and crashed my visor. I would appreciate the help.

Hey Mateo,
Only the newest versions of SkyScape products run from the module without any problem:
Lexi v3.1
5MCC v3.0
5M ER C v4.0, etc.

Regardless of whether the entire program resides on the module the 'personalDB' and 'notes' files will be written to the RAM when notes are added with the above versions (and higher) only.

Engraving vs. Sticker Labeling

Hi All,
Would it have been better off on the long run to have engrave the produce information on back of the 16 MB Flash module and others modules instead of using a sticker label?
This label on it is going to begin to wear out from just normal handling of the Visor real soon. Can these companies at least engrave the part number on the modules. What do you think folks?

I have not seen that on either my Handpring 8mb or my 16mb.
But I do agree with the engraving into the plastic. Hopefully that wouldn't raise the price on the SB's

THANKS, Doc Visor. I had the same problem and Handspring Tech Support didn't know as much as you do.

Now I know how to avoid a Flash crash, but it has made me want to back up my 8 MB Flash Module. Here's all I can think of:

1. Back up my Visor to my Backup module.
2. Do a hard reset.
3. Copy everything from my Flash module to my Visor.
4. Copy everything from my Visor to a 2nd Backup module or Flash module.
5. Do a hard reset.
6. Restore my Visor from my 1st Backup module.

Awful, isn't it? Wouldn't it be nice if we could Hotsync the contents of your 8 or 16 MB Flash Modules to your PC? Or, if there was a USB Springboard adapter, we could just copy the contents of the Flash Module to a folder on our PC, like we can with Compact Flash cards.

BackupBuddy has an option to sync all the contents of a memory module onto the PC. Unfortunately, there's no way to directly restore the data to the module, so you still have to do some switching around to get it back in if you have a crash. Also, CardAccess (www.cardaccess-inc.com) has a USBFileMover application that lets you read and copy FROM any module to the PC, but only allows you to copy from the PC TO the ThinModem memory (I guess other modules don't have the necessary libraries or drivers or whatever to allow writing directly from the USB).
