-- Network HotSync - IP to IP? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2878)
I have never needed to do this, so I don't even know if it is possible. But if I were to leave my PC on at home (online), can I sync from my office PC though the cradle? Kinda a IP to IP hotsync?
I am pretty sure I can't do it, but I was wondering if I was wrong, or if there was some 3rd party app that would allow it. And if it is possible, does anyone know what ports it would use, I would have to open the firewall at the office....or change the ports......
Thanks in advance.....I know someone here will point me in the right direction!

First of all, I am NOT a networking guru...
If you're connecting your home PC through an ISP, I think the answer is no. In order for an "IP to IP" connection to work, you need to be able to access the home PC via its IP address which is probably dynamically assigned by the ISP and therefore unknown.
In a typical LAN, each client has an IP address. Knowing what that address is allows you to connect to it to do a network sync. Over the Internet, this is not easily done. I would guess that a VPN (Virtual Private Network) might allow this, but again, I know next to nothing about networking in general.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I (probably 98% of the human population
) can comment further and answer more intelligently.

Well, for anyone else that can help, I do have a static IP, so that part isn't a problem.
I found a site that shows how to setup a hotsync using a modem and a static IP a the target PC, but as I said before, I want to be able to go from my cradle at the office, across the net, to my PC at home.
Anyone?
Ryan
If your office allows a direct enough connection to the Internet that you can get packets to your home PC, yes, it should work. It all depends on your firewall.
Speaking of firewalls, I would suggest you get one if you're leaving your home PC alone and unattended on the Internet.
