-- USB cradle (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=926)
I was going to order my visor on the handspring website when i read Windows 98 for the USB cradle. do you have to have win. 98 for it to run?? i have a win. 95 computer with a USB port.
Unfortunaly, because of the way the drivers are made or something, the usb cradle will not work on Windows 95. However, you will be a lot happier if you just get Win 98, the hotsync's are a lot faster and smoother. Plus, you will have a *slightly* better os.
Actually, it's due to the fact that MS did an absolutely CRAPPY job of implementing USB in their patch to Win95. Very little of the Win95 USB implementation works the way it should, so most drivers will not work with it.
And since I have such a problem with authority, I tried it anyway on my work machine (my personal one has Win 98). The first time I synced, it recognized the 'Handspring Visor' as a new device, then locked up. It locked up everytime I tried to sync after that.
Just in case any of ya'll out there where thinkin' about tryin' it..........

ok well that sucks thanks anyways.. i guess ill just get a serial cradle. why did handspring have to make it that way!!?? ohhhhhh welllll!! ill live..
Don't blame Handspring for Microsoft's shortcomings. It's not the driver's problems (well except for W2K), it's the OS's implementation of USB that's the problem.

You really can't blame Microsoft either, when that version of Windows came out there was still very few products out for USB, just basic stuff. I also do not believe it was standarized quite yet.
I'm extremely happy with the Handspring for going with USB, it was one of the deciding factors between the Visor and the Palm IIIx. USB is now really starting to replace legacy ports like serial and paralell, especially with Compaw & Dell comming out with PCs that use them exclusively (Following the iMac trend that started it all).
