-- Mac Users- What OS are you using? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9301)

Lightbulb

I've been using Mac OS 8.6 on my Power Macintsoh G3 Blue & White and running into occasional crashes while hotsyncing my Visor with Palm Desktop 2.6.1.

What seems to be the best Mac OS version to use with Palm Desktop 2.6.1 for Macintosh?

Thanks for any ideas.

Guido

i have 9.0.4... i had lots of problems synching until i upgraded my palm desktop to the newest... this was after a crash that required a reinstall of the OS... maybe a reinstall of the palm software was all that was needed...

Arrow Funny subject

When I first read the subject I thought it was redundant to ask Mac users what OS they were using.

Well, for the vast majority of Macintosh history you would have been correct.
It was only recently that the Apple underwent a Microsoft-esque fragmentation of their operating system.

Though that Aqua interface sure does look cool!

Tell me about it. As frustrated as I am with the Windows world, I really wish Apple made a x86 version of OS X (or someone sent me a Cube )

True, but note that you can run Linux and Windows on a Mac, too.

As for an x86 version of OSX, that would be silly. Why would Windows 2k support 486 machines? Sometimes, you need to push forward at the risk of leaving some behind...

Is OSX a revolution? No. It's a long-overdue update to the core Mac OS. Unfortunately, in addition to updating the internal part of the OS, Jobs decided that the interface needs updating too. I'm as of yet undecided if that was a smart move.

I disagree with the analogy. x86 is a different processor/platform than the PowerPC. As cheap as PCs are getting, if Apple sold a branded Pentium or Athlon-based computer with OS X, they could convert a lot of users. It would be easier to do Windows emulation also.

James...I misinterpreted your post. Sorry bout that.

Apple will never port Mac OS to the Pentium or x86 chipset. They make their money with their hardware sales and they achieve their efficiency by controlling both the hardware and the OS. Do I agree with that? no...I wish they would support the 'other' platform as well, but I realize why they don't.

No matter...Linux will have it's day soon

Joking aside, I really don't think Linux will ever get popular anywhere near its current incarnation. Installation is hell. Some company should concentrate on making a really nice installer that partitions one's harddrives automagically, and takes the user through a step by step setup process.

However, I think Mac OS X will be the best of both Mac and *nix worlds. I can't wait to see the final spit-and-polished product that will come from Apple.

They did get a version of OSX running on a x86, but whether they will package and sell a version, I don't know. I am leaning towards homer's reasoning, but you never know what Mr. Jobs is going to do.

On topic:
I was running 9.0.4 on a beige G3 without any problems hotsyncing for a few months. I then bought a G4 running 9.0.4 and had to go through all of the HS Palm Desktop updates. I think it is a combination of new hardware and the new OS that "breaks" the Palm Desktop. I could be wrong though.

I know Corel Linux is supposedly very easy to install. Mandrake has a very nice installation wizard as well.

Also check out http://www.eazel.com

They are a company of ex-apple interface designers that are developing a new front-end for Linux.

Penguin Computing or VA Linux

Well, for people buying a new computer but also wanting to run Linux, you can just buy a computer with Linux already up and running, from someone like Penguin Computing ( http://www.penguincomputing.com/ ) or VA Linux ( http://www.valinux.com/ ). That way, no worries about installation - it's already set up. Or if you're of the Mac persuasion, YellowDog Linux sells a hard drive with their distribution pre-installed - just pop it in and go. http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/

But if you're looking to install it over/with a pre-existing Windows/Mac setup, it's definitely tricky. I got my Mac clone in August 1997, ran MacOS on it up through version 8.6, and finally started running Linux as my primary operating system in August 1999. It took some finagling to get it working, but the Linux kernels now have really good support for pretty much any device that's out there, and new support is coming out all the time. But overall, it's much harder to install Linux than it is Windows/MacOS. Hopefully some of the efforts linux Eazel, Helix Code, and the commercial Linux vendors like Corel, RedHat, and SuSE will get things going in the right direction.

And Linux does support the USB Handspring Visor

they have a current version of macos 9, and macos X running on pentiums. the problem is that it wont ever be released. as for me, i have 8.6 on a wallstreet, and it works great. i was at the macworld expo new york this year, and the keynote rocked. free pro mice for everyone! the best part was taht i got in for free.

Posted by lennonhead on 11-15-2000 08:13 PM:

Yes, except for us people in the overflow room, we didn't get mice. How did you get in for free? I had to upgrade to a yellow badge in order to see the keynote. It also grants you access to the seminars that are for beginners (i.e. - What the internet is and how to use it on your computer... ::gag:: ) The keynote was great and so was the rest of the show, so I don't mind the extra cost.
