-- Direct serial PPP link using the VDX? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14844)
So Handspring's tech support has claimed that this isn't possible... but i'm not gonna give up
I've seen the ability to hook a serial Hotsync cable to the bottom of the Prism (and I think the Edge too) and establish a serial PPP link (and thusly a net connection) without having to use a modem. I'm assuming that it's built into OS3.5 and that's why I can't get it to work. I don't have the ability in my Prefs to switch to a direct to serial / usb connection... is there any software out there that can force this to work in OS3.1? Does this all make sense? Thanks for your help, everyone.

Modem Integrated into Mobile Phone
Can't you use the modem which is integrated into a mobile phone to make the PPP connection. I recently bought a cable from www.gomadic.com for my Startac to Visor Deluxe and it works awesome!
-cayeldo
You don't need PalmOS 3.5, all you need is a hacked verion of LINKDIRECT that uses USB instead of serial. AFAIK, it is only possible under Linux right now, since no one have bothered to hack it for other platforms. The Linux program is called LINKUSB and can be found at
http://sourceforge.net/project/show...p?group_id=1404
It works quite well and I was connected to the Net in no time, although using the Visor from the cradle is a bit ackward. A USB cable should be perfect for this.

Elegant method of connection
A serial cradle works for making the connection from the Visor to the PC. However, that's pretty clunky to use.
Here's a more elegant method of doing it, if you don't happen to have a USB port available on your PC or if you don't have a slim USB cable.
The DCH-H9 cable from www.markspace.com has a compact connector which plugs into the Visor (Solo, Deluxe, Platinum, or Prism) and the other end plugs into the PC serial port. This is a 3' cable. It works very nicely for the application which you are mentioning; I've done it.
HAs nayone found a solution yet to do it on Windows XXXXXXX machines.

Does this really work on a VDX?

Connection with Platinum
You're right, that may very well have been with my Platinum.
I've posted a similar question in www.deja.com a while ago about how to get this done. Apparently I had found the following (Hopefully someone might chip in more).
1) Mocha PPP (www.mochasoft.dk) - They work before for me with IRDA (Win95/98) but not via the serial cradle. The hint ? Go get IRLink from www.iscomplete.com (You can even hook up your nokia IRDA enabled phone with it). Sadly, I'm using Win2K now... the IRDA is not supported. I'm kinda stuck.
2) Fancy UNIX solution ? I heard of people getting it work there but I'm not on running UNIX.
3) Anyone knows russian language ? I found an article in www.deja.com about connecting the Visor to Win2k with special modem settings. (try searching the keyword "visor ppp win2000") it's interesting but somehow I don't do russian. I got lost in between...
Oh well, I guess that's all from me... Hopefully someone can shine some light into this issue here. Connecting via the handphone is fairly expensive here (done via IRLink) and I certainly wont consider it a solution for myself.

Life is like a box of chocolates,

Just wondering... Why the heck would you want to use your Visor to establish a Net connection via your PC when you can use the PC itself. It's not like you can move more than a few feet from the PC through which you are connecting anyway. And since that PC is already connected (and has a much bigger screen by the way) why would you want to do that? Am I missing something here?
Oh well, here's something for a thought...
Imagine yourself playing some 3D games in the net (Counterstrike, Half-life, Unreal...) while talking to a friend in ICQ/Yahoo Messenger. Alt-Tab between ICQ/YM and your 3D game is an idea but then again imagine the flexibility of having a visor hooked up to the cradle with your ICQ/YM running separately - sounds nice ?
Then again I am not assuming that everyone is doing the same thing all over the world. Palm users can do it easily (via Mocha PPP) - I certainly wish I would have a better choice than to hook my handphone/cellphone up whenever I wish to use my Palm ICQ or other PalmOS web software.

If one could make a direct PPP-conection with a USB cable, then one could easily modify a FTP client so that it would download large files directly (without storing in the Visor's memory) to a smartmedia card or compactflash card in a memplug springboard. This would make buying a separate card reader unnecessary.
Direct Serial link
So, if you have an OS which is capable of the direct serial link to a PC (Platinum, Prism) then I would recommend getting a travel hotsync cable, which is way better to use for this application than a serial cradle (try it if you don't believe.)
Such a cable (PDCH-H9) can be obtained at:

Direct serial PPP link using the VDx - I made it working
hey I made it. I have my Visor Deluxe connected via serial cradle to W2000. I can use VNC, internet and other software.
If you are still interested I will post a step by step manual how to do it. Its great.
Thanks Boban, I am still interested to know how to achieve it. Hopefully you can post the steps here and let everyone know how to do it.

In Control Panel install modem "Handspring: visor via COM port"
restart your computer
Make new network connection (accept incoming connections)
Select your modem "Handspring : visor ...."
Do not allow private connections
Select user who can connect to your W2k
If you have all of this you can press connect in net preferences (on Visor)
wait 10 seconds and turn off Visor and remove it from cradle
wait 10(20 or 30) seconds and turn it on and place back to cradle
then you will get Connection Established
Let me know, if it works to you.
Have a nice day
