Talking

Just to give us a little break from Prism vs. iPaq debates, here's a new wedge issue from Wired I thought was interesting.

Wired News ran an article today discussing their decision to change their spelling of electronic mail from "email" to "e-mail," abandoning the standards they set in Wired Style.

Which do you prefer? I'm sticking with "email" myself. I used to be the Technology Editor of a news website, and my Chief Content Officer and Copyeditor (who wrote our style guide) all agreed (as well as lower-casing "internet"). "E-mail" just looks old-fashioned to me, as if the electronic nature of the medium is still a novelty. Email acknowledges the medium's acceptance into mainstream culture.

Several posters on /. put the terms into a search engine, and "email" almost always one by a large margin. What do you think?

I think Wired is bored and looking to regain a little bit of it's 'authority figure' status that it has lost over time.

I, too, prefer email. It is pretty much a common noun now...clearly differentiated from the term mail.

I also hate when people capitalize 'internet' though I suppose there is a legitimate argument to do so.

And I wish the "world wide web" wording would just go away...too cheesy.

Thumbs down Must be a slow day

I saw that on /. and thought it must have been a pretty slow day over at Wired.

First thought: Who cares?
Second thought: email

I believe that Internet is supposed to be capitalized. At least that's what Word tells me

Let's get to the tough stuff:

VDX == Visor Deluxe
Prism == Visor Prism
Plat == Visor Platinum

Discuss.

Nah... I think it's worthy of its full name: Platinum

...and I prefer email on the Internet (or 'net)

I allways use iemeel if I write dutch... that is how you would phonetically (how do you spell that??) would write email...

In ENG I sometimes write E-mail and sometimes email.. depends on my mood I guess... I allso sometimes just say 'mail' and use 'snailmail' for the paper version...

Over all I would prefer E-mail.. but that is too much work typing

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

Why not use the scientific abreviation (sp? why is that such a long word?) Pt. Or how about the electron configuration? [Xe]4f^14 5d^9 6s^1. (Yes, I'm bored and I didn't memorize that, it's on the cover of my chem. book). All kidding aside, I think it does deserve the full name or even VPL (VPR for Prism) in some circumstances.

Those are good ones. I like 3-letter abbrev.

For every hyphen not used, it's another byte saved.

Sorry, but VPL is an abbreviation that's already spoken for. See Annie Hall.

Personally, I like "email." Capitalizing "Internet" is probably justifiable because, after all, there is only one of them.

Arrow

Merriam-Webster has e-mail.

Doing a web search, I found an interesting entry for VPL for alt.clothing.lingerie (Visible Panty Lines), which would be a great term for the Platinum considering the erm, Platinum establishments in the area. What were you referring to?

I think there is more than one internet. There is only one Internet. I saw that somewhere.

From Annie Hall:

quote:
Rob: He goes with that girl over there.

Alvy: Where?

Rob: The one with the VPL.

Alvy: VPL?

Rob: Visible Panty Line.

Yes, history was made a quarter of a century ago.

Wink

I prefer 'internet' and 'e-mail'. I get annoyed when word keeps 'correcting' internet to 'Internet', so I've added 'internet' to my word dictionary. Now everything is peaceful and quite!

Posted by Fishscaler on 10-26-2000 02:52 AM:

What about putting an apostrophe before net, to abbreviate "internet?"

Posted by yardie on 10-30-2000 12:39 PM:

Arrow Email for me

I will always use email. Don't see the point in the dash at all. I only capitalize "internet" if it is at the beginning of a sentence.

Wired, like e-mail, is passe
