I was playing around in Microsoft Outlook and I accidentally deleted all contacts except one (don't ask how). I didn't panic, because all my contacts were also on my Visor and I knew that all I had to do was hotsync.

I checked my Hotsync settings to be sure that Contacts was set to "synchronize" and it was. After my hotsync, I found that my Visor contacts were all deleted except for the lone contact in Outlook.

This story has a happy ending because I had just synced my wife's visor to Outlook just an hour earlier. I made it a point to change her Contacts hotsync setting to "handheld overwrites desktop" and synced all her contacts back into Outlook, then back onto my Visor.(Phew)

Doesn't synchronize mean that whatever is in Outlook and not on my Visor is transferred to my Visor and vice-versa? If this is the case, can anyone tell me what happened?

Lightbulb

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that there is some sort of time last modified field in each record. Synchronize basically figures out which device (your computer or Visor) last modified a record and makes sure both have a copy of the last modification. If you delete a record, when you sync, that record will be deleted from whatever you sync with. Therefore, since you deleted the records on your PC, Hotsync assumed you wanted them gone and deleted them from your Visor. If it went ahead and reloaded them, the whole idea of "synchronizing" wouldn't work as you would have to delete the record both on your Visor and on your desktop.

If you screw up your Visor, set Hotsync to "Desktop overwrites". If you screw up your desktop, set Hotsync to "Device Overwrites". Synchronizng just makes sure both devices have your last screwup stored (which was deleting everything).
