Question

For that matter, will accessories like the current Stowaway fit Handspring's next offering? Just curious if anyone knows the answers to this question, because it would affect any future buying decisions. Thanks

The way I understand it, Springboards WILL be compatable with future Visor units. After all, how could they become a standard if they were to be obsoleted in future hardware?

As for other accessories (like the Stowaway), that will depend on whether or not Handspring changes the docking connector. Palm did this with a few models as they went along their upgrade path.

Agreeing with Mark about the springboard. Why would they spend so much developement and advertising in the springboard if they were going to come out with a new standard on the next model. As for the Stowaway I think that it will work because of the current connector's usability. I think that Handspring will stay with this connector and find other parts of the Visor to upgrade.

If they do decid to change the docking connector, couldn't a converter be made to make it compatible with the Stowaway?

Thumbs up

I can't imagine Handspring making a huge blunder like non-compatability with the springboard on the next offering. I would imagine that the other connectors and accessories would be pretty close to compatible too - they will want to sell their new ones, and won't want to piss off all the people who spent lots of money on accessories already.

From the Handspring Springboard Developer's FAQ:

Q. If I develop a Springboard module, will it be compatible with future versions of Handspring products?

A. Yes. The Springboard expansion slot was carefully designed to last for many years. Springboard compatible computers and modules will likely still be manufactured ten years from now, probably much longer. Handspring is currently developing several new families of computers that will accommodate Springboard modules. Purchasers and designers of Springboard expansion modules should be confident that their products will work in these future products.
