Unhappy

Okay, I've a Visor Prism, and decided to try out the new Palm Desktop 4.01, which also upgrade Hotsync Manager and Install Tool to 4.0...

But I've some problems now, which are occuring ONLY after I installed Palm Desktop 4.01. to confirm, I uninstalled it back to my Desktop 4.0 and it's working fine now. Here's the problem, hope you guys can help me out here.

When I sync my Prism using Palm Desktop 4.01, I'll sometimes just get cut off from the Hotsync operation while my Avantgo sync is still actively searching for updated webpages! My Avantgo channels take up about 1.7 MB space altogether. The sync works fine for my m100 running on the serial cradle...

I'll have to press cancel on the Avantgo sync dialog box, then the Hotsync Interrupted box will pop up after that.... funny...
you guys have any help?

I am not sure what exactly is causing the problem... but I know Palm Desktop 4.0 doesn't give me that problem at all when syncing to Avantgo...

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have the same problem....Can't figure out what it could be!!!!!!

Hi ice, at least i know mine is not an isolated case...
I've no inkling as to why Desktop 4.01 is causing this prob...

So, I guess we just have to stick to Palm Desktop 4 and wait for Handspring to release theirs? I don't think they would provide support for Desktop 4.01...

perhaps this is a Prism issue?

I installed 4.01 on my computer at home and had no problems with my Platinum synching with AvantGo over the USB cradle. Then again, my AvantGo channels only take up about 500kB

Well, I have a Visor Deluxe, so it can't be a Prism issue. My Avantgo channels only take around 300k.
This is strange!!!!!!
It would be nice to hear if this is just a Visor problem, or if it affects Palm handhelds too.
If this is also a problem for palm computers, we can most likely expect a fix soon. But if it's only a Visor thing I doubt palm will rush to the rescue.

you guys must bear in mind it does not happen everytime you sync.... i was syncing fine for 3 times before this happened....

did you uninstall the previous desktop, or just install 4.01 on top of the existing desktop?

First I used Filez to set the backup bit on everything in my Platinum and did a hotsync. I uninstalled my Desktop 4.0, ran the setup program for 4.01 and in the HotSync setup, set all the conduits to Handheld overwrites Desktop. Then did another HotSync. Everything went well and without a hitch.

From what i've seen on the newsgroups and the boards, i seem to be part of a strange minority. I still haven't run into any syncing problems with my Platinum and Desktop 4.01 with either serial or USB.

imabug, how large are your Avantgo channels?
I dun think there would be much diff in uninstalling Palm Desktop 4 and then reinstalling Palm Desktop 4.01...

I've found it's usually safer to uninstall the old app rather than installing over top of it. Sometimes there are files and DLLs that need to be replaced but end up not getting replaced either because they're in use or inaccessible.

Thumbs down Palm Desktop 4.0.1 and AvantGo

This buggy software reminds me of a Microsoft product. Buggy and incompatible with other programs. It times out too quickly, especially with Avantgo channels or Mail and then freezes and crashes. I tried to reload the original Visor desktop but could not get it to reload and work properly. I've tried the hotsync updater, the pocket mirror update, the visor registry updater, reloading the hotsync and the original software from the CD, too just about everything.
I would prefer to keep Avantgo and not the Palm Desktop 4.01 but can't get back to my original settings.
Visor users beware!!

Posted by stormrider on 04-08-2001 06:55 AM:

true, that's exactly what i experienced...
Palm just doesn't give a thought for the other users...

It timed out, and i had to use CtrlAltDel to end the task...
in the end, guess how i had to get back to Palm Desktop 4.0 AND get my Prism working with the USB sync too?

I had to do a complete restore of my PC and the Registry from my fortnightly backup of my drive...

I recently upgraded to 4.01 too. The first sync died while downloading the avantgo channels. I guess it's a time-out issue from 4.01 that closes the connection after x seconds.. I did a little test, each time I synch with a 9600bps modem, it dies after a couple of minutes and with my cable modem, the download takes less dans 30 seconds and always finishes. I tried downgrading... but nothing appens with version 3, like if there was no connection.

Kaven

P.S. I'm staring to wonder if that's why (v4.01) I can't get my Visor to connect to the debugger...

Talking

AvantGo 4.0 and Palm Desktop 4.01 dance divinely!

I'd been waiting all day to get home and get these two together. It'd been like a high school dance!

Amazing HotSync Speed whether connecting to AvantGo or not! OH HAPPY DAY is right!

Thanks AvantGo & Palm!

Exclamation Incompatability

I read a posting on Handspring's website about the incompatability between Visors and Palm Desktop 4.0.1.

Even though they've added the USB connectivity, there seems to be a problem with the software and Visors.

Here's an excerpt:

quote:
If you have already installed Palm Desktop 4.0.1 and are experiencing synchronization problems, we recommend that you uninstall Palm Desktop 4.0.1 before you (re-)install the Handspring version of Palm Desktop software.

Here's the full link to the announcement.

Fix had been made

I've communicated directly with developers at Palm about the Hotsync Manager 4.0 problem -- they are aware of it, and they've already produced a fix in-house which is under going testing.
