Do you own a Handspring Unit
After following a few of the threads on VisorCentral, I noticed what I think is an interesting trend of non visor owners posting and commenting. So I am curious just how many visors owners out there.
My Ice VDx is my first and thus far only PDA.
I was happy with the Ice at first but nowadays I wish I'd goten the orange one ... 'course if I had I'd likely be saying that about the Ice one ...

quote:I think it's an interesting statement about this forum that even though people might have been rid of their Visors, they can't seem to leave this place. Incidentally, I've purchased three Visors (my original VDx, my wife's VDx, and my Visor Edge) and two of them are still in use (my original VDx was sold and its current state is unknown).

Yep
Toby,
It may be just me but, it seems that a certain amount of former Visor owners make it a point to come back and say that what ever model they have chosen is the best and Handspring is dead.
I don't think anyone wins when it happens.

I am one of those crazy users who switched to Sony and still keep coming back here. Of course, I do own two Visor Deluxes that I use. One is actually my wifes, though she never uses it. The other is my backup/testing PDA.
I keep coming to this board for a number of reasons. One, it is the best and most informative. There is a great deal of knowledge here. The one thing I really like is the content. Even when we go way off topic, everyone maintains civility.
I certainly do not come here to say that other PDA's are superior to HandSpring. That is totally subjective to each user, much like Palm vs. PPC.
I just think people are excited to be getting new PDA's and want to share. I, personally, see nothing wrong with coming here and doing so.

I currently have an ICE VDx with the following MOdules:
1. Minijam MP3 Player - I used to have 2 but I just sold the second one they sent me by accident and never sent anyone to pickup without its MMC Card - so lets see 249 for 64 MB on, Free MMC Card and 50 on the sale of the extra base module - 199 for 128 MB minijam - that's $30 cheaper than they sell for today and I bought my unit quite a while ago (Just after Christmas 2000)
2. Eyemodule 2
3. Margi Systems Presenter to go
Yet - I am thinking about jumping to the Clie T615C but currently (any have been since summer hedging for Handspring to bring out a 16MB Color unit). Won't be Hedgeing for too much longer.
2001-current: Visor Platinum w/VisorPhone (primary module), Audio Advisor, and Memplug with 64Mb CF.
Recent PDA hardware...
2000-2001: Palm IIIxe
1999-2000: Philips Nino 312
1998-1999: Newton Messagepad 2100 (upgraded 2000)
1997-1998: Newton Messagepad 130
1996-1997: Newton Messagepad 120
1995-1996: Newton Messagepad original
1993-1994: Sharp Wizard OZ-9600ii
1990-1993: Daytimer 8x11 'luggable'
1988-1989: Casio 128Kb organizer
That's just about how far back I can remember...
Unlike the PDAs of past, I just can't see myself parting with my current configuration. It's just the right size for jotting down short notes, looking up schedules, a little bit of PQA surfing on the Cingular network, etc. More importantly, I can backup/restore ALL the information onto the Memplug/CF card while on the go.
Having an 'integrated' PDA and cell phone is soo sweet... Yeah, I could get a Treo, but I'm standing my ground until Handspring comes up with a convenient mobile backup/restore method. My data is just waayyy too important to lose.

I have a Visor Deluxe but haven't touched it since getting my new Sony T615C. I still cant stop coming to this place to read posts, probably never will as long as its here and you all keep coming.
I just recently left the Handspring fold and went Sony.
Back during the summer of 2000 I spent $150 on a Cybiko device (I worked in an Electronics Boutique and had the bad habit of purchasing anything that even just 'looked' cool). It came to me quite soon after that for the same amount, I could buy a real PDA with real features (the Visor Solo), so I returned the toy to work and purchased (for $100 more) a Blue Visor Deluxe (which I then kept with me everywhere I went). It was also shortly thereafter that I discovered VisorCentral.
I had my Deluxe (and convinced a few people to get one themselves) until roughly about April of 2001, when one of my friends opted to get rid of his Prism in favor of a laptop. I gave him my Deluxe (he needed another one for his girlfriend, and he already had an Ice Deluxe) and paid him $200 for his slightly used Prism. That became my one and only 'carry everywhere' device until just recently. Within that time, I got myself a Stowaway Keyboard, Backup Module, Vaja Prism leather beltcase, Minstrel Modem, Memplug (obsoleted the Backup module), Beatplus, VisorPhone (obsoleted the Minstrel), Vaja Prism/VisorPhone leather beltcase (obsoleted the nonVisorPhone Vaja), and HandCam. Almost all of which I learned about here first.
This setup lasted me until a few days ago, when I got my Ericsson T39m off Ebay and my Blue Sony T615C came in the mail from Sonystyle.com. I can honestly say that these are wonderful little devices. The Sony ain't perfect (colors are washed out, jog wheel feels a bit stiff, stylus is a bit small, buttons are subpar), but the screen resolution and viewability far surpasses anything I've seen recently, and this INCLUDES my step-dad's Ipaq 3850 (non Bluetooth version). And my phone? Better for my needs than the bulky Prism/Visorphone combo (and will be an even better companion to my CLIE once Sony releases their Bluetooth MemStick).
So now I'm gonna pass along my Prism to another friend of mine (gotta keep it within the 'family' so to speak) and will probably pass along a couple of modules as well. Does this mean that I'm going away from VC? Heck no. This place is great. It's got great information, great people, and just a generally kick-butt setup. As long as VC doesn't force non HandSpring owners away, I'll stay.

soon to be former owner
I currently am a Visor Prism owner. Unless Handspring gives some unequivocal sign that they will continue to support the Prism, I will become a former Visor owner as soon as the Sharp Zaurus comes out.
Of Course
I've got my Platinum, and have been thinking of a Prism. If the stuff in January hadn't happened, I might have purchased one by now. IF I do, I'll announce it, because the last time I purchased my Platinum, they dropped the price $50 three days later. Since Prism hasn't dropped, They must be waiting on me before they do so...

My VDX is now downstairs in the storage closet, waiting for either my new Clie T615C to break down, go in for repair, or for my nieces to want a PDA.

Hehe. Well, I registered long ago, when I was interested in getting a Visor Deluxe, though I never got it.
Eventually, I was able to get a Palm IIIc, don't ask how, and I was happy with it. I visited the boards a little, but never really posted. Then I sold off my IIIc to get a new Clie 710 last August. Since then, this board has been a lot of help in everything and a great place just to chat about PDAs in general. It was not until recently, when my Clie was stolen, that I FINALLY came to Handspring by getting a Visor Edge.
This board is great for all users, not just Handspring. It's got nice people to talk to, and plenty of diverse opinions, all nice to listen to. It's also prettier and faster than sites like PDABuzz and PalmInfoCenter
. We outta give a thanks for the VC staff for making it all possible. Thanks Guys!

good artists copy, great artists steal. . .
I registered a long time ago, back when the Visor line and this site were practically new. I was interested in the Visor, but the lack of Flash ROM for OS upgrades turned it into a no sale as far as I was concerned. I'd already been screwed over on one too many computer systems with a non-upgradable OS. I used a Palm IIIx for a while and now have a HandEra 330 that I'm quite happy with.
Anyhow, from the start, this was one of the best PDA related discussion sites on the web. I still peek in every once in a while because there is a good group of people here, and the discussion is usually intelligent and good-tempered.
Nice post raptor!!!
I'm also a Handspring user, own Plat and Prism, and I'm looking to buy a Sony Clie, T615 or N760 with the MP3 Player. The 760 is tad heavier and bulkier than the T615, but I can't decide between them.
I like my Visors alot, so much hardware options for them unlike the others, but I too see a slowing down in supporting Visors. Handspring is focusing more on the Treo line, and I'm not sure how much long the Visors will be supported by them. The Neo, Prism, Edge, and Pro are the only Palm based PDA in the market that still uses the aging Palm OS 3.5 while others are running 4.0+. Handspring really in need of some up to date PDAs if they want current Handspring users to stay with them. For example, for the same price of an Edge, the Clie T415 offers much more with a higher Palm OS 4.1, higher resolution 320x320, memory stick slot ( no need to purchase an additional memplug), and comes with software bundles). Again, all for the same price of an Edge. Because of this, I think is why current Visor users are looking else where for an upgrade.
I have owned my Visor Deluxe for 14 months now and am very happy with it. (Former Everex CE 2 device and Palm IIIx owner). I just recently bought a eyemodule and got a SM memplug for Christmas. I love the flexibility of this unit. I thought about getting a Neo to get the faster processor and updated OS, but decided I might just wait to see what happens with Palm OS5 and ARM processors. I think the comments by Handspring about getting out of the organizer business also had an effect on my decision about not upgrading to a Neo.
It looks like most people are defecting to Sony, but I still don't like the rechargeable battery in a sealed case. I like the idea I can get fresh battery power anytime without worrying about having a battery charger.
I am rather new to VC. Just started to follow some of the posts and recognize some people from PDABuzz.
