I guess you're looking for the backlight? Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds and the backlight will turn on. Press and hold the power button a second time to turn it off.

agreed, the backlight does not work in dim light but i think it looks great in the dark. i like the palm 3's backlight, but the visors backlight isn't that bad

One neat program you can get is Mirror. It turns the whole screen black so you can see your reflection, but if the backlight is on, you can use it as a not-so-great flashlight. Go the http://www.palmgear.com and search for Mirror.
