Posted by PDAENVY on 11-21-2000 04:09 PM:

After not finding instructions in the box or on Psion's web site, I emailed them. As predicted in the automated response, I received an answer from a person in about 3 days.

Here is the text of their response - the official instructions as it were:

How to install a Psion 56k Travel Modem on the Handspring Visor and Handspring Visor Deluxe

Requirements

Handspring Visor or Handspring Visor Deluxe

Psion 56k Travel Modem

Procedure

Setting up your 56k Travel Modem

Before using the 56k Travel Modem you must first:

Configure your Handspring handheld for use with your 56k Travel Modem.
Connect the modem to a power source (battery or mains).
Connect the modem to a standard telephone line socket or a mobile phone.
Align the Infrared ports on the modem and your Handspring handheld so that they are facing each other.

Setting up your Handspring handheld for use with the 56k Travel Modem

To use the 56k Travel Modem with your Handspring handheld the Operating System (OS) must be updated.
The required files (Enhanced Infrared Update files) can be found on the web-site at http://www.palm.com.

A direct link to the download can be found at
http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/irenhanc.html
(Psion cannot guarantee this link).

It is a good practice to backup your Handspring? handheld before installing new software.

Note: The Handspring handheld does not support the 56k Travel Modem GSM data feature.

The Enhanced Infrared Update includes 4 OS update files. Please download 3 of these files.

IRLib.prc download this file
SerialIrPnl.prc download this file
SerIrCommLib.prc download this file
and AMX.prc. DO NOT download this file, it is not needed

Once downloaded the 3 files required can be transferred to your Handspring handheld in the normal way using HotSync Manager.

To do this use Install in the Hotsync Manager, or double-click on each .prc file.
Once you have transferred the files you will be prompted to reset your Handspring handheld, tap the reset 'button' on the screen to do this.

Once the Enhanced Infrared Update files have been installed on your Handspring handheld the Serial/IR option will appear in the Preferences menu.

To configure your Handspring handheld for use with your 56k Travel Modem.

Having downloaded the Enhanced Infrared Update files:

1. Select Infrared from the Serial/IR option in the Preferences menu.
2. Select Modem from the Preferences menu.
3. Enter the settings in the Modem screen as detailed below:

Modem Standard (this will change to 'Custom' when you enter the String ATZ as below)
Speed 57,600 bps
Speaker Medium
Flow Ctl Automatic
Country Other
String ATZ

Select TouchTone from the TouchTone/Rotary option at the bottom of the screen.

Reconfiguring your 56k Travel Modem settings for use with your Handspring handheld

You need to reconfigure your 56kTravel Modem using EasySwitch to use the setting Configure for Palm OS.

Before you can use EasySwitch you need to install the easyswitch.prc file found on the CD-ROM supplied with your 56k Travel Modem onto your Handspring handheld. This can be done in the normal way via a PC using the Handspring handheld Hotsync Manager.

To reconfigure your 56k Travel Modem using EasySwitch:

1. Switch on the 56k Travel Modem and align the infrared port with your Handspring handheld.
2. Open the EasySwitch application.
3. Tap the Menu icon at the bottom left of the Handspring handheld 'toolbar'.
4. Select Modem from the menu and then select Configure for Palm OS.
5. Tap on Continue in the Configure for Palm screen.
6. Tap Close to exit EasySwitch and save the setting.

Connecting to the Internet using your 56k Travel Modem

Before you can connect to the Internet you will need an Internet browser application program loaded on to your Handspring handheld. Sites offering suitable downloads can be accessed from the Handspring handheld website at
http://www.handspring.com.
You will also need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) account. You will then need to enter the account details that your Handspring handheld will use when making a connection to your ISP.

Entering ISP account details:

1. Tap on the Preferences (Prefs) icon in the All menu.

2. Select Network from the Preferences drop down menu.

3. Enter your ISP account details.

4. Tap on the Details button at the bottom of the page and enter the following settings:

Connection type PPP
Idle time out Power Off
Query DNS ticked
IP Address tick Automatic

Note: certain ISP may require different settings than the ones above, if you experience difficulties logging on please check with your ISP.

5. Tap the OK button to complete set up.

To connect to your ISP

Make sure your Psion 56k Travel Modem and Handspring handheld are switched on, correctly set-up and positioned. Ensure that the Connection selected in the Preferences dropdown menu is the 56k Travel Modem.

1. Tap the Preferences icon in the All menu.

2. Select Network from the drop down menu and tap the Connect button at the bottom of the page.

3. Your Handspring handheld will then dial your ISP.

Once a connection has been established return to the home menu page and tap the icon for your Internet browser application.

To disconnect from the Internet go to Network in the Preferences drop down menu and tap Disconnect at the bottom of the page.

This is not different information from other threads (except for the bit about custom not being enabled until ATZ was entered - that had baffled me), but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Now if I can just get it working with my ISP...
