I'm interested in getting a memplug, have a couple confusions though. I tried emailing memplug tech., but they haven't replied. I also had no luck searhing old threads. Sorry if this is a duplication of previous topics.

(1) Does the memplug module itself stick out, or just the smartmedia card when inserted?

(2) If I order a PC reader/writer for smartmedia cards, will it work. On the memplug site, their faq's cite this:

After transfering some pdb files from PC to SmartMedia Card, and coping those databases to internal RAM, the application failed to launch with those databases?

A:
The PiMover relies on the standard Exchange Manager of PalmOS to transfer files between SmartMedia� Card and your Visor, a small number of pdb files that do not add the needed 2 padding zero in its header may have problems with Exchange Manager.

(3) Does PiMover "move" programs back and forth from RAM to SM or is it a copy program like FAFileMover from Kopsis?

The smart media card will stick out a little bit and the module is nearly the same size with the standard module, just a little bit thicker.

you can use the PC reader/writer to move file from your pc to smart media or creating directories. You'll see the file on your visor.

Pi mover can move or copy file back and forth from RAM to SM.

1. The Module is mostly flush, bout the same dimensions as a standard springboard (i.e. handspring backup module), it has two tiny nubs or bumps towards the top of the module, the media card sticks out about 1/4 of an inch, but I have heard you can cut it to be flush as its only cosmetic plastic on the edges.

2. Yes. I only had one program that balked about pdb files copied into the visor memory rather than be hotsynced (geoview).

3. Yes, it's a manual movement just like the Kopsis FAFileMover, except the program is stored in the flash memory of the memplug and not in your Visor's memory. PiViewer, PiBackup, and gMovie are also stored on flash.. handy if you hard-reset your visor, makes it pretty easy to restore your Visor from the smartmedia card with minimum fuss.

I love it, the best "general purpose" module I own.. I recommend it to anyone who owns a Visor.

CSpotRun is pretty handy too!!

Exchange Manager is the part of the PalmOS that supports "beaming" databases between two devices. Developers can "hook" into this functionality to allow the databases to be transmitted via means other than IR (in this case the storage card drivers).

The exchange manager expects to be talking to another exchange manager and makes a lot of assumptions about the format of the database. However quite a few databases in distribution don't exactly meet the exchange manager format (though HotSync handles them just fine). Older versions of Kopsis FAFileMover also suffered from this problem, and we wrestled with it for months before finally arriving at a stable fix for the latest version.
