Double SB slot

Is a double SB adapter available. While surfing the net w VP I'd like to listen to music or take some pictures at the same time.

There's no double SB adapter available because there's no support in the SB interface for multiple modules.

But their will be once I've had my way I've been begging HS for this capability.. we'll see what happens in the future.

I think it'll require an overall interface change to make a double SB adapter possible-- from what I've read, there is no bus system for the springboard interface, so there is no way for PDA-to-module communication to be routed to multiple modules. To enable such a feature would most likely require buying a new PDA with a "new Springboard II!" slot.

Imagine a Dual SB sled for the Edge, Kinda like the Dual-PC sleeve for the iPaq

my understanding is that the SB slot is basically an extension of the basic processor bus. It's "local bus".

if you added a second processor, then you could get a second bus, this would of course require some changes to palm OS, but it would give you some interesting options.

I doubt it would be worth it.

HandSpring could do it. The problem is that it would add about a hundred dollars to the cost and become about the size of an Apple Newton.

Hey, I would love to have a new brick!

I'm thinking a dual springboard visor would probably make for a pretty big and cumbersome PDA unless they went with the Edge style springboard connector and did something similar to the expansion slots you see on an HP 48GX. Springboards are going to have to get a lot smaller before I start wanting to deal with a multiple springboard Visor.

Again, I refer everyone to the recent Dilbert cartoon and PHB's "PDA" (sometime towards the end of May I think).

The HandEra 330 already requires 4 AAA batteries to support it's two expansion slots. I don't want to have to start using AA batteries to power my PDA...

Exactly.

The need for more/bigger batteries, room for an extra connector(s), and room for additional (lots) of circuitry is going to make this hypothetical beast huge and expensive. You might as well just buy a sub-notebook and get it over with.

Posted by bob151 on 07-10-2001 06:00 AM:

Maybe instead of an extra SB slot, they'll just select a "standard" memory expansion medium and simply design a built-in interface for that memory.

Imagine, a CF slot (which you won't have to pay $20-$50 more for) you can populate with gobs of stuff and exchange frequently, and a SB slot for MP3 player, cell, whatever....

If I were them, that's what I would do as a value-add.

Don't you mean doorstop?

Talking

Hey, a $400 doorstop! how nice. just what I always wanted!
couldn't ya have gotten me a tie or something ... grumble

Back to topic for a bit, it would be nice to be able to "daisychain" modules -- some sort of standard pass-thru connection, like SCSI and/or USB. (I mean like in that they have that option, not like as in how they handle it.) This probably wouldn't be feasible for the power hogs -- like eyemods or modems -- but the simpler stuff, like the backup module for instance.

just a thought.

It would be better if they just added a memory card slot along with the springboard.

Same Problem - daisychaining would still require all of the hardware and software to drive multiple cards. The only difference would be that it would only need one connector.

To balance this gain, it could require even more power since you are no longer sarestricting the bus to a fixed number of cards. You could say that it only supports a max of two cards, but you still need to provide enough power for both cards to draw the full amount that the spec allows.

So you still need big batteries and lots more complexity in the design.

Are you sure you're not one of those TV psychics? I'd almost be willing to bet money that we'll see a future Visor with both an SD slot (all the code to make it work is already in PalmOS 4.0) and a Springboard connector - just like HandEra has both their original CF interface and an SD slot.
