-- CompactFlash vs SmartMedia: How Fast? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13991)
Need some technical spec or field test. Which storage is more efficient for file moving, retirval, memory access, or etc? Your comparison can help alot. Thank you.
I belive that it all depends on the reader that you're using. I have both a CF reader, and a SM reader, and the speeds are the same on both of them.
BEN
It doesn't matter. Both weren't designed for speed.
If you really want to know, they're about the same. Except Lexar has "high speed" flash cards. Whether or not you can use the "high speed" depends on your device.
Well, it's a little more complicated than just the speed of the media. Both CF and SmartMedia modules use driver software to support the "MS-DOS" disk format that is used on the memory cards. In addition, current SmartMedia adapters use additional software to perform the duties of the flash controller logic that is built into CF cards. Because of the limited horsepower of the Visor's CPU, the driver software often becomes the speed limiting factor.
Reports that we've received indicate that FAFileMover for CF cards is noticeably faster than MemPlug's PiMover for SmartMedia cards, but it would certainly be nice to see someone publish some independant benchmarks.
