-- NiMH batteries for VPL (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14914)
I have been using Duracell Ultra for my VPL and consider switching to rechargeable NiMH batteries. Any recommendations? Thanks to all replies.
I use 700 mAh Energizer AccuRechargeables and am happy with them, but most other brands of NiMH's would probably be fine. More than any particular brand of battery, I recommend getting one of the PDA battery recharging kits especially the one from ICU Accessories because it uses normal AAA NiMH's. (I own one and love it). These are great because they eliminate the fumbling with and changing of batteries which are likely to be more frequent if you switch to NiMH's. They can also double as AC adapters if you're the type that uses their PDA for a continuous and extended period of time.
I also love the ICU. I want to just put in a link, but it's 12:30, and I'm tired
. Your too options are the Fullcharge battery system, and the ICU (my choice) The one thign abotu the ICU, is that many peopel sell it all under their own name, yet it is all the same product. In fact after I posted my review, abotu a week lator, a guy who claims to own the patant e-mails me, and shows me his site, which is competly different. OH well ... ICU is also avible in CompUSA

I rotate three sets of Rayovacs and they work fine for me. The ICU kit is nice but, I find that you still end up doing battery management because if you properly charge the batteries. To get the fullest life out of NiMH battiers, you need to use them up until you get the "low battery" warning from your Visor as opposed to Lithium Ion batteries, which are better when topped off. Humbley, my $.02
ICU Charger
I first saw the ICU on a kaizen page over in Japan. It was for the IBM version of the palm.
You could make a *really* neat charging solution using the ICU with putting spring terminals in the back of your cradle, and running wires from the power adapter to it. You could also do the USB cradle pins to the power hack that I've seen around and have a chargable in the cradle deluxe/plat just like those lucky prism owners.
Cheers!

Question about rechargeables
This is a timely discussion. I just bought some Energizer NiMH's. I thought I read in some discussion that there is some shortcut I need to enter somewhere so that the Platinum recognizes that it has rechargeable batteries.
Is this true?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, In a new memo write shortcut
dot, dot, 7 Keep doing this until it shows the correct battery. The memo can then be deleted.

I use the icu set up works great. I have never had a situation where I lost data because of low battery.

NiMH works fine. If you have a launcher that shows the voltage left on the batteries, try to change the battery when it's at 2.35V (instead of looking at % battery left). You'll be fine.
I have 8 NiMH rechargeables and I always carry 2 extra with my VPL (in the loops in the case). Since I'm always using my VPL, I change batteries once every two weeks. My current battery management system works rather nicely.
