Is this possible or is there some software (pref. free) that can do this?

What kind of Nokia? If it has an IR port and is wireless data enabled, you shouldn't need any additional software. You just have to set up a connection in the Prefs (Connection) app.
Connection Method=IrCOMM to Modem
Dialing=TouchTone
Volume=Low
Hit the Details button->
Speed=9600
Country=whatever
Flow Ctl=Automatic

Hit OK twice, and you should be able to choose it in your Prefs (Network) when you set up your ISP, turn on IR on the phone, and go.
