Smile Palm Emulator as desktop replacement?

Major Newbie Question:

I have a dead Visor (screen cracked). Fortunately, I have all my data stored in the Palm Desktop app. I've used the destop software ever since. But now, I'm running OSX and I have to start MacOS Classic everytime I want to look up a name etc... So, I downloaded the Palm emulator for OSX. I also did a google search and found a palm ROM (curious if this is legal?). I now have the Palm emulator running.

Q. How do I import my user data into it? When I go to import data/apps they're all greyed out. Is this because I need a visor ROM? All I really want is my contact list.

Any suggs appreciated.

Broken Screen

If your screen is broken, try going to www.gethightech.com and look for a replacement screen, their pricing is fair.

As for using the Palm Emulator, it sounds like you have a bad ROM file, but I havent used it much.

Goodluck

Grayed Out Means "not correctly Installed."

I had quite a lot of trouble getting my POSE properly installed - but once it was set up, all of the "Right Click" menu choices work fine. You can even "Hotsync" with the Desktop, just as if you were using a visor in the cradle.
- it's been a while so I don't remember the exact locations, but you should be able to find instructions by:
-- go to Visor Site / select Developer / select Develpment Kit: Software, SDK & POSE.
-- there are several links here that will help.

- one of the things I found was a short program w. instructions on how to download the
ROM file from your PDA.
- once POSE is installed, you've got to configure it: rt click in POSE window, select NEW, and configure your emulator including where to find the ROM file.

Well, in a word: No.
It is legal for you to use the (serial-only) software to download the rom from your Visor. It is also legal to sign up to become an official PalmOS developer, which will give you access to special debug roms.

But Palm Inc. frowns on web sites that have PalmOS roms available for download.

If you own a visor, isn't it legal?

It's legal for you to copy ROM off your visor.
It's not legal for anyone to post ROMs they don't own and it's not legal for you to download those ROMs.
However, I believe it is legal for you to download a copy of a ROM you already own, where said copy was made by someone else who also owns that ROM.

Once you get your POSE issues ironed out, see this page for information on how to set up POSE and the Hotsync manager to be able to Hotsync POSE with your desktop information. Scroll down to the section entitled "Configuring POSE for Network Connection."
