Unhappy

This is not a big complaint but I wanted to see if anyone else noticed this same problem. I do a lot of book reading on my VE just (like I did on my previous palms) so I use the bottom rocker button the most compared to the other buttons. Anyway, I am now noticing that the bottom part of the rocker button is now tarnished and almost black! I first noticed it after about 1 week of use and now that I'm on my second week, it is definitely getting duller and darker. It is kind of hard to see because of the reflecting nature of the buttons and my wife could not notice it last week but she had no problem seeing it today.

I don't use the VE in a dirty or dusty environment and I am assuming that it is just the metal reacting to the natural oils on my hand (which are not abnormally oily by the way)and rubbing with a cotton t-shirt does not help at all.

Anyone else noticing this at all and should I contact HS about possibly replacing the unit?

Thanks for your input.

I've been noticing the same phenomenon. At first I thought it was my imagination, but ultimately I came to the same conclusion....tarnish. My recommendation is to try buffing the buttons with paper towel moistened with Windex (or any alcohol based glass cleaner). Seemed to do the trick for me.

I use a few aluminum-handled hand tools at work and always end up with a black tarnish on my hands... I've never noticed it on the tools themselves. Perhaps someone with a metallurgy background (Hoser, are ya listenin'?) might be able to shed some light on this phenomenon.

I have already tried Windex and that did not seem to help at all. I am afraid to try anything stronger though.

Well,it seems that my tarnishing problem is limited to my unit. The problem is definitely not going away but getting worse. The bottom button of the scroll button is just about black now and it won't come off. I have been doing a lot of reading this week since I downloaded "Dreamcatcher" by S.King (great book if you like UFO stories by the way! Much different for King.)I really have not tried anything stronger than Windex though, I don't want to cause any damage.

So I called HS this morning and explained the problem to the customer rep. She said that she has not heard of that problem and even borrowed a supervisor's "well used" edge and said that all of the button were still very shiny and not tarnished at all.

They are going to send me out a new Edge in about 3 days. I explained that mu Edge was only 2 weeks old and (besides the tarnish) is in excellent condition and that I did not want it replaced with a refurbished unit. She assured me that since the Edge was so new that they were not sending out refurbs at this point.

Hopefully this will take care of the problem. Other then this, I love my Edge!

Me too. The Edge is a beautiful device and it certainly draws attention. Last week I stopped over at one of the radio stations that I design web sites for, to go over some material. I was in the broadcast booth (no I wasn't on the air) talking to the DJ about making some additions to his portion of the site, when I pulled out my Edge to take notes. He stopped in mid sentence and said "Wow, that's slick looking, what is it?". I gave him the whole Palm device speech, and then two women from next door, in the production booth, looked through the adjacent window and came over for a peek. I even talked one of them into getting a PalmOS device, not an Edge, but at least a PalmOS device.

Hopefully I won't have to make a return, because I love my little Edge!

Hey Foo! Do you have an identical twin? This morning you wrote how you are going to request a return from HS?! :-)

I say a lot of things in the morning, but I don't always carry out my threats.

For now, I will wait a week or so to see what happens. If my Edge starts behaving strangely, it's going back.

I received my replacement today, less than 48 hours from the time of my call on Sunday morning! Not bad.

I noticed right away that the replacement Edge's buttons were much more shiny than my original unit. I think some process was left un-done on my original Edge that made it easy for the buttons to tarnish.

So far...So good!

No, wasn't called for, but we'll let it go at that. I mean the guy sells insurance...he's miserable enough already

My Edge buttons have begun to tarnish too. I was playing AtomSmash for about 3 hours the other night, the next morning the Address and the ToDo buttons were almost black. I used a mild tarnish remover (actually it was watered down) and that removed the tarnish.

But the way I look at it, this shouldn't be happening especially since my Edge is only 3 weeks old. I can image the buttons tarnishing over time but 3 weeks...come on.

Now the buttons (address button mostly) have lost their shine and are kind of dull. I'm going to talk to Handspring on Monday. There's no reason that my 3 week old unit should look like this after a small amount of normal use.

Maybe Handspring should put up a disclaimer stating that the Edge isn't for use with games that require using the buttons.... LoL

I just noticed that my buttons and stylus are quite tarnished. I'm keeping it, as I think it looks rather distinguished - adds character at any rate.

To each their own. I like character but not in the form of tarnish....

Dang it, now my buttons are starting to look tarnished... Actually, I wouldn't mind so much if they turned black...

I PM'd PDW, the originator of this thread and he got his replacement Edge. It began tarnishing also. It must be a wide spread problem. HS needs to replace the bad ones, and find a solution.

I'll take my replacement in the form of a color edge.
