Palm releases beta of OS X Desktop

With only IV days to go, Palm beats its deadline of delivering a Mac OS X Palm Desktop.

Server overload.

I've been trying to download the software for the last little while, but the Palm servers have been hit HARD. So far no luck. Judging by the Mac website forums, the experiences of others have been the same - just can't get thru.

I would sooooooo love to be able to sync with Entourage X on my iBook but even just Palm desktop would be OK. (In the meantime I've been using my Outlook-endowed PC desktops only.)

Eug

EDIT: Got it. See rest of thread.

Could someone please post screenshots of the new Palm Desktop? I would love to see how Palm implimented the Aqua interface!

Damn! That looks beautiful! Too bad the PC version looks like crap.

You've got me drooling now.

I was hoping for synching with Entourage X, but no dice. However, Palm Desktop 4 for OS X looks so nice I may start using it full time, especially since the accts. which my Entourage X accesses are not my primary email addresses anyway.

Gotta love it. The simplicity of the Palm & Visor, the stability of Unix, and the beauty of OS X... But then again, I'm biased.

To be fair, Microsoft said in their Office v.X FAQ (I think) that once Palm does their part, they would work on the proper conduit. So come on, Microsoft. Time to step up.

No slag against Msoft. I think they have some of the best software for the Mac actually. I didn't really expect Entourage X to be able to sync but one could always hope. Hopefully the conduit will come soon.

Now I know why it took them so long

Having fought the problem of conflicting startup applicaitons on MacOSX, I immediately went looking for what the new version of Palm for OSX might have installed in Preferences>Login>Login Items. There were two items: Transport Monitor and Palm Desktop Background, If anyone tries to use this new Palm app with any version below OSX version 10.1.2, they will have trouble launching apps in the finder. Icons will just bounce and they will not be able to Force Quit. Apple fized the bug in 10.1.2. now I have three different OSs to sync in. Including Virtual PC 5.0 with BackupBuddy.

Very pretty, but ...

Well, I've finally downloaded it, and installed it, and I think I'll probably switch back to running the old version under Classic shortly.

a) You can't sync with Classic running. Not too big a deal, since I have most of the apps I want under X now, but still annoying.

b) AvantGo doesn't yet have a conduit that will work, which I will miss terribly.

c) Each time I sync, though everything works, I get an error message from Transport Manager, saying that I'm already trying to sync. Ok, so things work, but this is just silly.

d) Despite trying the install twice, and checking the options in Preferences, and restarting, there's no Instant Palm Desktop. Sure, when the whole of Palm Desktop is running, I can click its icon in the dock and find entries, or make an appointment, but what's the point if the app is already running? Quit the app, and the icon goes. If you keep the icon in the dock, it's just a plain ordinary launch icon. It doesn't do anything.

Presumably something that was supposed to install hasn't. But I don't know what, and I don't know where to start looking for it.

If I can't have the Instant Palm Desktop icon in the dock, then there's not a lot of point running this beta. I'll just go back to what I did before, keeping the icon for the OS 9 desktop in the dock, and I'll have all the same functionality, plus my AvantGo and WordSmith conduits.

Latest Mac OS, incidentally X 10.1.2, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll come back to this when it's finished, I think.

Nigel.

Anyone know the e-mail address to pester Avant Go?

Smile AvantGo alternative

but only for extreme OS X heads...

check out Plucker @ www.plkr.org -- you'll need Python and some mastery of the command line, but the advantage is your pages become installable PDBs... no conduit necessary. Between this and Blazer (which I needed for live browsing which AvantGo failed on) I've got all my web needs covered. Plus it's free, fully featured, and totally solid in execution.

In the Install Files dialog, there's a Change Destination button. Apparently lets you install directly to an external card, if you have one. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be enabled for my Visor (with FlashAdapter)... I suspect it requires a Palm 125/500/505, or at least Palm OS 4. I would have liked this feature too. Oh well, I guess I can wait to see if Sync Buddy comes to Mac OS X.

Otherwise, I love being able to sync from Mac OS X. Someone mentioned Plucker... I've had it installed for some time now, with scripts to deposit the plucked file directly to the Files To Install folder, and it all works very nicely.

Unhappy Palm Desktop Beta

Don't get me wrong. This looks great, and it is certainly nice to see those red and ble sync arrows spinning in all their OS X glory

BUT Since installing the Palm Desktop I have had a recurring problem. I have a Powerbook G3 and rarely do I turn it off. Usually I just shut it and tuck it away until I need it again. This causes Palm Desktop to "LOSE" my user data. And I can't bring it up again. It vanishes. Mysterioso.

I have recreated this bug three times. Each time I end up creating a new USER and deleting the old one. However I have noticed one thing. This version asks for a password before sync. Is it possible that my data is not missing but locked?

Cheers

Angry

After many attempts to download the PDT Beta, I succeeded last night. Got it installed on my iMac with OSX (10.1.1) and all seemed well. Did synch and had duplicate names, but deleted the extra ones, and synched again, so went to bed happy. Then, today I boot up the iMac and click on the Palm icon in the dock and it won't start. Nothing else worked either. Had do reboot manually. This happened several times, so I finally deleted the Palm DT and am back to normal, sans synching. Has any one else had this trouble? this is with a Visor Platinum, but the trouble is on the Mac. maybe I need 10.1.2. I may try again, but would like some suggestions.
Looks good, though, once the bugs are gone.
Regards
Bob

Get 10.1.2 Immediately

Unfortunately 10.1.1 was seriously flawed and it especially affected launching applications and force quitting them. OS X acts like it is supposed to with 10.1.2 installed.

1) Would probably help to upgrade to 10.1.2

2) There are still a lot of issue with the beta, and I've heard of similar problems so you might also have to wait for Palm to fix them.

10.1.2 doesn't help

The problem is not the Mac, but the PD software. I'll just wait for the next release.

The problem with startup items not initializing and causing applications to both not startup and be impervious to Force Quitting is pretty well-documented by now. It is Apple bug number 2805470. Palm Desktop puts the Palm Desktop Background and the Transport Monitor into the Login startup items. In versions previous to 10.1.2 this would cause the problems that he was talking about.

Palm Desktop for X is beta and flawed but unrelated to Apple's just fixed bug.

my point is I am at 10.1.2, and I still have issues.
