Question

Can anyone tell me if you can run programs off of the 8 meg module,or is it just for storage. IOW, do I have to delete stuff out of RAM in order to make room before I move a program from the 8 meg module onto the visor? Does this also apply to data files (docs, pdb's)?

Cool

You can run programs from the 8 meg FlashRam Springboard just fine. You cannot edit a document file that is stored in FlashRam.
So I generally store my programs in the FlashRam and the data in the Visor proper.

Yes, unfortunately you must first place a program in the main Visor memory with a hotsych, then you move it into the flashram with the file mover. So you have to have free space in the Visor memory.

Angry Limitations with 8mb flash module

I am bummed out: I wish I could copy from desktop to module directly. Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the OS or the software/hardware combo of the module? Does the TRG force you to do the same?

A minor clarification to Winchell's reply. You can store data on the module, as long as you don't plan to edit it. So for example, I keep the data files for certain books on the module. I also keep the map data files (which are quite large) for Mapopolis on the module. However, if I want to create or edit a maplet created in Mapopolis2, I first move the map to Ram on the Visor

You say that you can't edit the data -- can you add bookmarks to books?

Mr. Cohn is correct.

The answer is Yes, if you do it correctly.

For example, I have Peanut Reader and the novel "Antares Dawn".

In the 8 meg flash rom, I have
Peanut Reader application (95k)
Antares Dawn Novel (361K)

In the main Visor RAM I have
Antares DawnEx (1k)
Antares DawnKz (1k)

One of those is the bookmark file, I think the other is for any notes you want to add.
So you see that you have to keep any file that will be modifided in the Visor RAM, but in this case, those files are miniscule. The bulk of the stuff went in the FlashRam.

Unfortunately, I believe that all files that you want to look at with TealDoc must be in Visor RAM, as the mere act of opening them results in some data being written to them.

The problem re: DOC readers may not be universal. As Winchell mentioned, TealDoc chokes on DOCs stored in the 8MB SBM; but iSilo is fine (provided you don't store bookmarks in the DOC file itself - as iSilo gives you options over where you save bookmarks). I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing that PeanutReader should also work OK with DOC files that are in the 8MB SBM.
