I came up with mine when I was younger and my older brother was my Idol. His is madpeoples, mine is just tweaked a little bit...

What a fun thread

This has been quite a fun thread to read through.

I used to use Pyros back in the ole BBS days. It was an AD&D character of mine. However, as I got older I stopped playing D&D and needed a new moniker.

About that time I "discovered" Jimi Hendrix. I had always loved music, but Jimi inspired me to create my own (even though he has been dead for 20-some-odd years.) I even got a picture of his guitar tattooed on my arm with the words: "Are You Experienced?" emblazoned around it. After about a year with the tattoo, it struck me that RU EXP would be a great liscence plate. However, in this state it costs more if you don't end your plate with a number so I added 67, the year Jimi's first album, "Are You Experienced," was released.

Since I can't use spaces in most places for user name I just scrunched it all together: RUExp67. Some people get it, most don't. They tend to read it as a single word so I get referred to as rue a lot. Does not bother me, I just think it's funny. I am also really impressed when people get it.

My early years were warped even further by my introduction to a comedy troupe known as the "Firesign Theatre". The username, thisisside5, is a quote from the second side of "Waiting For The Electrician Or Someone Like Him". It's always fun when some old firesign-head recognizes the reference.

Its history - I came up with it as my Hotmail account name and have used it for almost every login name I have with the exception of my work account. In fact, if you see volcanopele or volcanopele1 as a screen name anywhere on the net, its me.

You know, this thread is so long, I hope I haven't posted my story already, and forgot about it .

Anyway, ernieba1 was SUPPOSED to be pig latin for Bernie, BUT I was much younger at the time, and didn't realize there was supposed to be a y, making it erniebay, so I just went ahead with ernieba, and added a 1 because I thought sounded good. Years later, when I found out I was wrong, I didn't change it because changing e-mail addresses is really a drag, for me and everyone I know.

Years and years ago when I began visiting the IRC channels I got pestered too much for 1) having an eaily spotted female name and 2) not having a really cool unique name. I thought of snippet as something that's genderless and is used in a few of my favorite pasttimes. It's stuck with me ever since, I'm called snip by a lot of my friends. When I want to hide, or my name is already taken, I use teppins (snippet spelled backwards).

Snippets are bits of code passed along to others (I'm a programmer)
Snippets are bits of leftover thread in cross stitch (I cross stitch)
Snippets are little bits of useless stuff...

I love reading the stories about how people picked their screen names. Mine is just boring. It's my first and middle initials and my last name - Jonathan H. Appel - but at least it's easy for me to remember. I'm afraid that if I used nicknames from school people would get the wrong idea about me as many nicknames from that time (late 60's - early 70's) were derived from either drugs or politics.

well my name has been with me from freshman year of high school. culo is spanish for *ASS*. and 77 is the year of birth. also my last name sounds like culo and going to a high school thats mainly hispainic...came culo77. boring huh

Some Dutch background on my mother's side if you go back far enough. I was named after the first person on her family tree, Juan de Lehman, who was expelled from Spain during the Inquisition in 1491. He and his family moved from Spain to Amsterdam. The family left The Netherlands somewhere around the mid- to late-1600's for England and then to the US in 1817.

My name, Appel, actually is Anglecized German. My father's family came from Germany around 1847 where the name had been Apfel. Boy do I wish I was related to Karl Appel. I love his work.

My screen name is just my first, middle and last initials [for] fun. I picked it just because it was easy to remember and wouldn't likely be taken. I own it on most site that you need to register a sn. I think ICQMail is one of the only site it was already taken on, but I don't use that anyway. Okay, so mine is pretty boring, too.

Wow, I didn't even remember posting to this thread before, under my original account 'Usonian'. At some point a couple of months ago I lost the ability to post under that account, and neither myself nor the VC staffers could figure out what the problem was... SO... here I am, Usonian2001. (Dang, and I had just gotten past the 100 post mark on the old account too!)

All my computers that have had hard drives have had animal names. My current one, an iBook 500 dvd is called Aardvark, my 2y/o PC laptop is known as Pangolin, an antique powerMac 6100/66 desktop went by Wombat, while a non-working 386 notebook was a sound a dog makes... woof.

When I first discovered the internet and had to come up with a "name" I used my first initial and my last name with a y added to the end. The y is because one of my co-workers always called me "Starky baby". Now that she is gone my other co-workers have reverted to calling me other names that are not allowed in print...
