I'd pay big $$$ to solve this impossible problem

My daughter typed 60 pages of a book she was writing into a handspring deluxe. She dropped the Handspring and it wouldn't hot sync or charge. She sent the data to my Handspring (battery powered, but I lost it) by the time I found it the batteries had died. I quickly replaced the batteries, in handspring #2, usually it retains the data through a battery swtich, but it didn't. It works fine , I still use it, but the data was gone.
The orignal handspring slowly died. That was a year ago.

Is there any chance that data is anywhere retrievable? I would pay a big chunk $$$$ to get it back.

Unfortunately without power (especially over a year), the memory will be lost with no chance of recovery.
