Xircom Wireless Ethernet module, yours if you want

Well, I bought a Xircom Wireless Ethernet adapter for my Handspring Visor Prism. I thought maybe I could check movie times, get map info and such with it. But that is all in the past.

After two days of setting adjusting I have had no luck. I tried everyone's advice on the forums. And of course, it connects to the network, and I can verify that with the router software, but Blazer will not do anything.
I even tried Vagabond, Netspring, and another browser, but that all give me the same response. "The page could not be loaded because the connection was lost or could not be established. Check networking settings, and make sure coverage is available if using a wireless device." Or something similar.

My goal is to use it only in the public. So a restriction free network is what I want to connect to. IE: no encryption, and dynamic IPs.

If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
And if anyone wants to buy it for $89.00 and mess with it themselves, you can have it. (I bought it off amazon on Nov30th 2004)

I hope someone help me out soon.

Hmm. Something to try - I remember reading somewhere (wish I could point you to the source) that you had to put in a user name and password in the network preferences on your Visor to get the Xircom to work - they weren't necessary for logging in to the network, they just had to exist on the Visor. I used "a" and "b" for the user & password.

Also, if you're trying to use the original Blazer (1.x), I believe that it was a proxy-based browser and the proxy no longer exists. If you haven't tried it, the Eudora suite for the Palm works well for me. If you can get it, Blazer 2.0 does not require a proxy and works pretty well, also. Download speed, however, is closer to dialup even though my connection is DSL - still OK for checking email & whatnot.

I don t know if the network name and pw was the important part.

Blazer 1.1 must use the proxy as you said. It still doesn t work.

Are there any other browsers that work as good as Eudora? Besides Blazer 2. That may have graphics?

Blazer 2.0 uses proxys.
Blazer 3.0 does not. But I can not find it anywhere to d/l.

Pocketlink 2.35c (or whatever) can be run on a visor prism w/OS3.5.x installed. It is non proxy and is available to buy.

I do not know if Blazer3.0 or Pocketlink will work.

As far as graphics d/ling goes, I don t mind waiting a little longer as long as the Prism can get them.

The Prism is a non-supported device. It is legacy now? I find that quite appealing.

Let me know if you have anything on those two browsers.

And as for the battery goes, have it rebuilt. We should look into this.

D'oh! Blazer 2.0 does use a proxy - evidently one that's still around, unlike the proxy for 1.1. Sorry about that. I thought Blazer 3.0 was for the Treo only (ARM-based processor), but after the proxy thing, you might want to check. Never looked into Pocketlink. I seem to recall another one called Xiino, but it looks like the current version requires PalmOS 4.0 or later.

As far as the battery goes, I just haven't taken the time to try opening the Xircom - but now it's gone from a mild irritant to being almost useless unless I have the visor/Xircom on a travel charger.

The pocketlink 2.56c said it will work on os 3.5. But it did not. I think I requires a Palm m505 or better.

Even though I just bought the Prism and all that stuff, I am looking into PocketPCs with wifi.

What do you, or did you, do with it before?

I surfed with the Xircom quite a bit, but the later acquistion of a laptop & Wifi card suits my usage pattern much better. I'm on several mailing lists, so I receive a lot more email than I send - for that, it's pretty nice. However, I imagine that either a newer ARM-based Palm or PocketPC would surf much better than a Prism - the processors are an order of magnitude faster and screen resolutions are higher, which allow for better rendering of a web page. It's all perspective - remember that the Xircom listed for something like $299 when first announced! I was happy to get mine for around $100. Admittedly, though, a Prism/Xircom combo is getting pretty long in the tooth. But hey, some folks still haul around Apple Newtons !
