Unhappy

OK, received the Handspring modem and now have a few questions:

1.) How do I set up my modem in Win98 to always answer when called?
2.) Is there a way for my desktop PC and voice mail to differentiate between me calling to to a hotsync or a friend calling to leave me a message? How can I set everything up so that I can call whenever I want for a hotsync, and friends/family can call to see if I'm home/leave me a message?
BTW, I don't have an answering machine, I have voice mail. One more "BTW"...I DON'T want to pay for another phone line! I already have a cable modem and use it for internet access.
3.) How is a remote hotsync transaction secure? I believe I'll be prompted for a password before the hotsync takes place? In other words, how does the system know it is me dialing in for hotsync and not another Palm user? I believe this was a security issue in the past and I don't know if it has been resolved.

Thanks for any help!

Look into a service offered by most phone companies called "distinct ring."

Talking

i'm not sure how the handspring modem operates, but this might help.

i run a home office: on a single phone line i have my telephone, fax, and modem. all of these devices are connected to a device called the comswitch which recognizes incoming calls and directs them to the right port. ie: someone calls my house, and the comswitch picks up after the first ring, listens for a fax or modem tone and then sends the call to whatever device it was meant for. this way, voice calls are always sent to the phone, and my girlfriend never has to transfer a fax line to the fax (although, it is possible if by some fluke the originating fax had no cng tone to tell the comswitch what to do.) anyway, you can pick one up at any any staples or office max, i'm sure they're available via the web, and they come in two or three different models depending on your needs. i got the one that can handle the most devices, and i think it cost me 90 or a bill. i've been very pleased with its performance so far.

so when i do get my visormodem - i'm holding out for the sixpack - that's how i plan to handle it.

hope it helps.

matty.
