Hi Mike.. I just called HS regarding replacement of my 2 month old VPR due to the paint issue. They have changed thier paint process according to the rep I talked to. I thought that I may have problems with replacement because of it being greater than 30 days... There were no questions asked.

Quick, courteous service and no "on hold" time calling customer service. The whole process took about 5 minutes. I suggest that all who have this problem call HS.

... oh I did buy from direct from HS, but that was asked after I was told that they would send me a new one.

I finally got my Prism that I wanted sooooo badly yesterday. I have been following this discussion and found that after only 24 hours of use I get to throw my name into the ring as having a paint problem with my Visor. I love the product itself, just don't like this paint problem. I will be sending a e-mail out to HS after I have had a good nights sleep and can think straight.
Thanks to this group for the great inflormation and now that I too am a owner I will understand this group even more

I disagree totally with bkbk's approach, which is to attack. (And I'm perplexed--s/he doesn't even own a Prism!) Of course it is natural to be frustrated and angry. But I don't think that everything has to be a combat.
I have found that most companies who really are concerned about quality and serving the customer--like Handspring--really do appreciate customer feedback. I have had personal correspondance with Donna Dubinsky to help correct a problem. That is impressive. We don't need to yell, shout, threaten, nor demand. Most of the time we just need to inform and ask. I think that we can clearly express our frustration without being combative. Keep in mind that you are dealing with people, too. They like to be treated with respect also. You will find that most of the time, you will get good treatment when you render good treatment. (What goes around...) If one finds that not to be true, then maybe some honest internal reflection on one's own attitude and approach is in order.
All I'm saying here is: Let's be helpful.

You guys/gals (if male/female) may feel your "pacifistic pleas" haven gotten your somewhere. But MONTHS later (IT'S 2001-EVE, IN FACT) Handspring is still essentially laughing in all of our faces ... for $449 per.

Maybe in other (non-capitalist) countries it's "okay" to jack around the consumer -- and you've learned to "just TAKE IT." But in the U.S. we have "Lemon LAWS" and other consumer protections to SHOW BIZ. WE ARE NOT CLOWNS THEY CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF -- AND WE ARE FULLY PREPARED TO TAKE THEM DOWN, AND TAKE THEM OUT IF THEY DON'T "PLAY FAIR."

I understand what you are saying and agree to a point. Handspring should have gotten the Prism right the first time around especially at the price they were charging us for it. I was forgiving of the Visor Deluxe inability to update the operating system because of the ability to expand, and even with the Prism as well. (16bit color does make a difference)

But . . .

What company doesn't have issues. Microsoft contiues to put out faulty software and people still pay $200 for a brand new copy of Windows? Which can screw up my PC cause of what ever issues (millions of them) yet people still get it. (like a bunch of lemmings)

If there needs to be a legal action on a company . . . sue Microsoft. They cause a lot more problems than Handspring.

Handspring is a very new company and they have done well by me. I had my paint issue resolved very quickly. I explained my problem to Handspring and they told me to exchange at the point of purchase (Staples) and there were no questions asked. Handspring has chosen its vendors very wisely and which have good return and exchange policies. (I have already stated this resolution ealier in this thread)

I love my Visor Prism. It does its job well . . . and it doesn't crash as much as a CE device ie: Casio E-1XX

Handspring (lackluster) Response

This is what I wrote to Handspring:

I'm sure we all quite agree that this whole paint issue isn't the best of scenarios and no, it shouldn't be happening at all. But haven't you all discussed it to death? There's nothing you can do about it except to keep returning defective Prisms at Handspring's expense. read: unless you are going to take legal action, stop your whining. Shouting here and there and complaining and getting philosophical and psychological isn't going to do much good. And while I can respect a certain amount of venting, it does get old when trying to up with real solutions posted here. I will take HS at their word when they say they are to get this resolved so that is does not happen at all.

They tried something, thought it worked pretty well and we found a flaw that we're not keen on. They're working on it. Function-wise, the Prism still stomps the IIIc and the Platinum ain't half bad either. SO, why can't we just let this issue rest, quietly monitor it, and then simply let new people know what's going on when they report it here?

That's my two cents and some change...

You miss the point that "legal action" is hardly what is most relevant. Study human life, and you will discover that other things come before the legal system, and are much, much more powerful. Since there is no official poll, this post is to register another "no paint rub-off problem". I purchased directly from HS one month ago and it was replaced after one week because the "down" button did not consistently work. I use cases but I take it out multiple times during the day to hotsync and/or recharge.

The only problem I've had so far is the keyboard popping up a little too often.

By the way, as a desperate attempt to stay marginally on topic (This is VisorCentral, not BibleCentral, after all) I'm happy to say that I've had my Prism for just about two weeks now and have had no problems at all so far with the paint. If I do, I'll call Handspring for replacements as many times as it takes for them to get it right. If it bothers me enough I'll ask for my money back and buy something else; simple as that.

We can post terabytes of messages about what Handspring SHOULD and SHOULDN'T do and what we DESERVE for $449, but what it comes down to is (and I'm addressing the theoretical "you" here, no one in particular), if you have the paint problem and it really, really bugs you then return your damn Prism and tell Handspring exactly why.

Vote with your wallet... if you're pissed at Handspring go buy something else, don't go posting messages that start with "I love my Prism, but" or "Handspring is one step away from not getting another penny from me." Alerting others to a potential problem is one thing... but I don't think it's a thing that requires three pages' worth of posts.

Well, I guess I'll add my story to the list.
I got a Platinum for Christmas, along with a Slim Leather Case, and a Fisher Space Pen Bullet Pen w/ stylus. i had been storing the pen in between the Platinum and the velcro strap, where the pen would rub up against the Visor. Today, just over a week after getting it, I noticed the paint has rubbed off in that location. I am extremely disappointed.
