I am thinking about purchasing the Magellan GPS companion when it comes out, but the marcosoft quo vadis software that is bundled with it does not seem to have turn by turn driving directions. Are there any palm os applications that provide these type of directions that would work with the GPS unit? If so, how much do they cost?

nope, you will not find "turn by turn" in a Palm OS PDA,
at least not for now and not for "street level" maps.

I think I have seen a program with that... but beware, they may cover only some main roads in large cities, maps will take much more memory and you can get a coffee between each screen refresh :-)

A Palm PDA doesn't have enough horsepower ...yet, so do not expect to find a substitute for a much costlier dedicated car guidance system.

Nexian and Rand McNally will be releasing a StreetFinder for the HandyGPS at the end of February which will allow for turn-by-turn directions on maps.

Wink Rand McNally

I heard the Rand Mc Nally Street Finder Deluxe is not only going to have point to point direction but it will also include more POI's, better maps, you can download the whole state at once on your PC, and more detail overall.

Unhappy

I would just be happy if I could use mapblast to create my "turn by turn" waypoints and import them in to my visor.

Is a software script that extracts the waypoints from mapblast into a "standard" magellan format - but the MapCompanion has no way of importing waypoints.

Talking Turn by turn directions

Solus pro allows you to download turn by turn directions from DeLorme products on the PC such as Street atlas. The route is fixed, but the turns are indicated both in left and right indications and graphical form. Solus pro keeps track of which leg of the path you are on and indicates the next two turns generating an alarm when a turn is imminent!

If you deviate from the predefined path, Solus Pro cannot compensate, but it does indicate the range and direction to the next waypoint and your position on the route map.

Solus Pro 2.0 with the Street Atlas v. 8.0 road warrior edition is best since it employs compact vector format.

Solus pro works beautifully with TRUE SERIAL NMEA GPS units such as the Magellan GPS Companion and the Garmin eTrex with a serial adaptor. (You do have to "wake up" the GPS occasionaly by disconnecting and reconnecting in the gps menu, but it works)

Please note that solus pro does not work with the supposedly "NMEA Compatible" Geode, no present third party software works with the geode. There is considerable debate whether the geo view mobile software works with the geode in any practical manner.

A geode is a big, heavy, overpriced sparkly rock whcih makes a good paperweight.
